몽골 GKS 동문회는 6월 4일 몽골의 수도인 울란바타르시 남쪽에 있는 벅드산에서 나무를 심었습니다. 몽골 '후렐수흐' 대통령께서 2021년에 선언한 “10억 그루 나무 심기” 운동에 우리 동문회가 기여하는 뜻 깊은 자리였습니다. 이번 나무 심기 행사에는 14명의 GKS 동문들과 몽골에서 나무 심는 운동의 선도자 역할을 하고 있는 우리 자랑스러운 동문인 몽골 과학기술대학교 Serdaram.D 교수님이 이끄는 My club의 회원 총 89명이 함께 참여하여 3,500 그루 낙엽송 나무를 심었습니다. My club은 지난 16년 동안 120만 그루 나무를 심은 단체이며, 몽골의 사막화 방지 등 녹색 운동에 크게 이바지 하고 있습니다. GKS 동문들은 행사중에 동문회 모임을 가져 향후 동문회 활동에 대하여 의견을 교환하였으며, 차기 회장 선출 건 등 허심탄회한 이야기들을 나누었습니다. 이번 나무 심기 행사는 주몽골대한민국대사관에서 전폭 지원해 주셨으며 이장원 서기관이 함께하고 동문회 활동을 격려하였습니다. 우리 몽골 GKS 동문회는 대사관과 NIIED의 지원에 감사드리며, 앞으로도 동문회 활발한 활동을 이어나가도록 하겠습니다.

On June 4, the Mongolia Chapter planted trees on Bogd Khan Mountain, which is located south of Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, to take part in “Billion Tree,” a tree-planting movement launched in 2021 by President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh. This year, 14 GKS alumni were joined by the 89 members of “My Club,” an association led by Damdin Serdaram, a GKS alumnus and professor of history at the Mongolian University of Science and Technology who is also a pioneer of Mongolia’s civilian-led tree-planting movement, in planting a total of 3,500 larch trees. My Club, a significant contributor to Mongolia’s environmental conservation efforts (e.g. prevention of desertification) has planted 1.2 million trees over 16 years. The GKS alumni took a break from tree planting to hold a meeting, at which they discussed their future activities, the procedure for electing the next president, and other issues. The day’s tree planting was largely funded by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Mongolia, with Secretary Lee Jang-won participating as a sign of support for the Mongolia Chapter’s efforts. The Mongolia Chapter is grateful to the embassy and NIIED for their support and is excited about the activities planned for the rest of the year.
