2022년 2월 24일에 자메이카 GKS 홍보 시절인 Jervian Johnson 씨가 한국정부장학금 프로그램 설명회를 개최했습니다. 이 이벤트의 목적은 대학원에 진학하려는 자메이카인들에게 GKS 정부지원 장학 프로그램에 대해 홍보입니다. 해당 설명회는 한국 대사관으로부터 지원을 받았고 자메이카의 교육부, 기술 대학교, 국무총리실, 한국국제협력단 등 여러 기관들을 통해 홍보되었기 때문에 약 70명의 참석자들이 참여했습니다.

On February 24, Mr. Jervian Johnson, the GKS Publicity Envoy for Jamaica, hosted an online information session on the GKS program. The session, which aimed to promote GKS’ state scholarship programs to Jamaicans interested in pursuing graduate studies, was held with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Jamaica. It was attended by approximately 70 people thanks to having been advertised by multiple organizations, including Jamaica’s Ministry of Education & Youth, UTech Jamaica, Office of the Prime Minister, and KOICA.

Jervian Johnson님이 한국정부장학금의 지원조건, 혜택들과 지원 절자에 대한 자세한 정보를 강의했습니다. 그리고 자메이카인의 관점에서 한국에 유학하러 오는 장점들을 나열했습니다. 아직까지 한국에서 거주하고 근무하고 있는 GKS 동창인 Deonna Harris 씨도 해당 모임에 참석해서 GKS 학생으로서 경험했던 도전들과 성과, 그리고 자기계발 기회에 대해 언급했습니다. GKS 동문 이외에도 국제청소년연합(IYF)에서 온 Jermaine Garvey 씨가 초청 강사로 모임에 참석해서, 해외 유학 시의 정신건강 유지 방법, 적응 방법 등에 대해 발표하고 경험을 공유했습니다. 이후 설명회는 참여자들이 진행자와 질의응답을 하는 시간을 가지며 마무리되었습니다.

Johnson gave a presentation on GKS application requisites/eligibility, benefits provided by the GKS program, the application process, and advantages to be gained by Jamaicans studying in Korea. Ms. Deonna Harris, who found employment and currently lives in Korea, explained her experiences and accomplishments as a GKS student and stressed the wealth of opportunities that are available for professional development. After presentations by GKS alumni, Mr. Jermaine Garvey of the International Youth Fellowship (IYF) shared with participants how to adjust to and maintain one’s mental health while studying abroad and talked about his own study-abroad experience. The session ended with a Q&A session in which participants asked the presenters a broad range of questions.
