마카레나(Macarena Bravo) 동문은 주재국 유명 K-Pop 제품 판매 매장(Dico)에서 근무 중이며, GKS 프로그램 이수 당시 학술 내용 및 어려움 극복 방법과 동 프로그램 이후 취업 현황에 대해 발표했습니다. “한국외국어대학 한국학 석사 진학 후 한국역사 수업을 수강하여 한국어의 발전 및 문화에 대한 이해도를 높일 수 있었으며, 동 계기는 현재 하고 있는 한-서 번역 업무에 도움이 되었다. 석사 과정 대부분의 수업을 한국어로 수강하였기 때문에 언어장벽으로 인한 어려움이 존재했지만, 동 학과 교수님들의 도움을 많이 받아 자신의 한계를 극복해 나갈 수 있었다”

Ms. Macarena Bravo, who is working at Dico, a popular K-pop goods store in Chile, gave a presentation on the degree program she took through GKS, how she overcame difficulties while studying in Korea, and how she found employment after graduation. She explained that, by taking classes on Korean history for a master’s degree in Korean studies from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS), she was able to gain an understanding of Korean culture and how the Korean language developed over time—which serves her well in her current job translating documents from Korean to Spanish. Bravo stressed that she experienced hardships in terms of language, as most of her classes were taught in Korean, but that she was able to improve her language skills with help from faculty.

카롤리나(Carolina Jimenez)는 현재 칠레에 거주하며 산티아고 세종학당에서 코디네이터로서 근무 중인 전 장학생이자 2021 GKS 홍보대사이며, GKS 프로그램 지원 동기, 학술 내용, 미래 계획 등에 대해 발표했습니다. “영어권 나라가 아닌 곳에서 영문학을 전공하면서 공통관심사를 가진 여타 외국인 동료들을 만날 수 있을 기대감 및 GKS 프로그램 보다 좋은 제도가 없다는 판단으로 인해 동 프로그램에 지원했다. 영문학을 전공하면서 영국 및 미국 문학, 시, 영화드라마 등 석사 과정에서 제공하는 수업은 모두 수강하고, 졸업 논문은 21세기 미국 문학에 대해 작성했으며, 한국 생활에 큰 어려움 없이 졸업할 수 있었다. 세종학당 코디네이터로서 한국 방문을 희망하는 학당 학생들에게 우리나라에서 공부할 수 있는 다양한 경로를 공유하고 싶다”

Ms. Carolina Jimenez currently lives in Chile and works as a coordinator for King Sejong Institute Santiago. Jimenez, who was also a GKS Publicity Envoy in 2021, gave a presentation on why she applied for the GKS program, what she studied in Korea, and her future career plans. She explained that her decision to major in English literature through the GKS was based on two factors: 1) her desire to meet, in a non-English-speaking country, other foreigners with similar interests and 2) her belief that the GKS was the best scholarship system available to her. Jimenez also explained how she took all of the master’s courses in the English Language and Literature major (British and American literature, poetry, movies/dramas, etc.) and wrote her graduation thesis on 21st-century American literature. She said that she had no difficulties living in Korea and hopes to share her study-abroad experience with KSI students who wish to visit Korea.

오프라인 참석자 중 일부가 대사관에 제출한 ‘한국 추억이 담긴 사진모음집을 함께 관람하며 한국 경험, 칠레 귀국 후 취업 현황, 장학생-동문 간의 더욱 원활한 네트워크 구축을 위한 개선 사항 등에 대해 자유롭게 의견을 공유했습니다.

Active discussion was held on participants’ experiences in Korea, the status of GKS alumni employment after returning to Chile, and strategies for building a stronger network to link current GKS students with alumni.
