인생은 인연의 연속이라고 한다. 나는 한국에서 소중한 인연들 많이 만났다.
제가 수학 했던 연세대에는 외국인 유학생들을 돕는 Kevin(국제처) 선생님이 있었다.
외국에서 유학 온 학생들의 멘토를 맡고, 대학 생활 적응 및 한국 생활 적응 및 한국 생활에 대한 모든 안내를 해주셨다. 저는 2009년 가을부터 연세대 몽골 학생을 모임을 만들어 각종 행사를 진행할 때마다 Kevin 선생님께서 물심양으로 도움을 주셨다. Kevin 선생님은 조금도 힘들어하거나 괜찮아 하지 않으셨다. 오히려 외국학생들 이렇게 도와주니까 보람을 느낀다고 하셨다. 10년이 지난 지금 Kevin 선생님 덕분에 한국에 법무장관님 뵈었던 일화를 소개하고자 합니다.

5월의 학교 캠퍼스는 얼마나 아름다운지 아직도 잊을 수 없다. 몽골의 고비사막에서 태어나고 자란 저에게는 연세대 캠퍼스는 천국 같았다. 새로운 문화, 소박하면서도 멋스러운 건물들, 수많은 학생들. 풀 한포기, 나무 한그루, 건물 하나 하나가 매일 보아도 꿈의 여행 같았던 어느 5월의 아침이었다. Kevin선생님께서 전화를 걸어와 며칠 뒤에 장관 면담에 학교 대표로 참여 하니 질문 내용을 정리 해 오라는 전화를 받았다. 평범한 외국인 유학생인 내가 한국의 법무 장관 만날 기회를 가지더니, 이련 영광이…. 우리 나라에서는 상상조차 못 할 일이다. 약속한 날에 다른 학교 대표 학생들과 한국의 법무 장관님을 뵈었다. 학생들이 질문을 시작했다. 그때 문득 내 머리속을 스치는 것이 있었는데 지난번 출입국 이동 서비스가 학기 말에 학교에서 열렸는데 학생들에게 학기 말 보다는 학기 초가 낫지 않을까하는 생각 들었다. 드디여 내 차례였다. 저는 장관님, 출입국에서 하는 이동 상담이 학기 끝날 무렵에 하는데 사실 학기말 보다 학기 초에 하면 한국에 처음 온 학생들에게 편합니다. 처음 한국에 온 학생들은 출입국 사무소가 어디 있는지도 모르고, 언어적, 문화적으로 서툴고, 그래서 학기 초에 하면 학생들에게 도움이 되는 유익한 상담이 될 수 있다고 말씀드렸다. 그때 옆에 있던 담당 국장 한 분이 ‘어기 학생, 참 좋은 지적해주었다. 앞으로 감안해 보겠다”고 했다.

그리고 여름 방학이 되자 모국에 있다 8월20일 쯤 한국에 왔다. 비자 기간이 2년이 만료되고 있는 상태라서 외국인 등록증 연장을 위해 준비를 하다가 23날 학교에서 출입국 이동 상담이 이루어지고 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 내 의견이 현실로 이루어지더니… 그때도 그렇고 지금도 생각이 같다. 한국이란 나라가 발전하게 된 원인과 민주주의 진정한 의미를 생각을 보게 되었다. 아무리 외국인이라도 별 볼 일 없는 유학생이라도 그 의견을 존중하고 귀를 기울인다는 것 자체가 고귀한 점인 것이다.

Kevin 선생님께서 추천해 주신 덕분에 한국 법무장관님 뵙고, 또한 저 같은 외국인 유학생들을 손톱 만큼이나 도울 수 있어 지금도 생각하면 좋은 추억으로 남았다. Kevin 선생님은 모든 외국인 학생 한 명 한명 귀를 다 기울여주시고, 고민과 여러운 일을 기꺼이 해결 해 주셨다. 많은 유학생들이 Kevin 선생님과 같은 분 만나서 한국에 대한 좋은 인식을 가졌을 것이다. 아니 지금도 Kevin 선생님은 그 유학생들 마음속에 한국이란 아름다운 나라와 유학 생활의 좋은 추억과 함께 큰 자리를 차지하고 있을지 모르겠습니다. Kevin 선생님이 제가 혼자 가보지도 못했을 한국의 지방 모습, 대구, 부산, 전라남도 담양 견학 등 좋은 경험을 많이 만들어주셨다. 10년이 지난 지금도 가끔 페북으로 Kevin 선생님과 통화하면 제가 마치 10년 전 유학 시간으로 돌아간 것 같은 느낌이 항상 든다.

지금 세계는 코로나란 전세계를 휩쓸고 있는 전염병이 확진이 한참이다.

곧 어도움이 밝혀지고, 우리 서로 자유로워질때 제 젊음과 학문의 아음다운 추억이 만들어진 대한민국과 모교인 연세대학교, 고마운 Kevin 선생님 뵈러 갈 것이다. 그런 날이 하루 빨리 오기를 기원하며…. Kevin 선생님 그때까지 건강히 세요. 항상 감사드립니다.

People say that life is a never-ending series of hellos and goodbyes. I formed many precious relationships during my time in Korea.

There was an employee named “Kevin” at Yonsei University, where I received my degree, whose job was to help foreign students. He was a mentor to study-abroad students and gave us a lot of information (and help!) so that we could adjust to life at Yonsei University and in Korea in general. In the fall semester of 2009, I created a club of Mongolian students at YU. Whenever we held an event, Kevin helped us in many ways. Kevin was always there for us foreign students, even though it must have been very taxing. He insisted that he gained a lot of satisfaction from helping foreign students. I would like to share with the GKS community how, 10 years ago, I met Korea’s Minister of Justice thanks to Kevin.

I still remember how beautiful the YU campus is in May. For me, born and raised in the Gobi Desert, YU was like a paradise. A new culture, simple but beautiful buildings, the many students, and every blade of grass and each tree all seemed like parts of a dream. It all started one May morning. I got a phone call from Kevin, who told me to make a list of questions because I was invited to attend a meeting with the Minister of Justice as a representative of YU. I was flabbergasted, because there was no way that a regular university student in Mongolia (let alone a foreign student) could attend such a meeting. On the day of the meeting, I went to see the Minister of Justice along with the student representatives of several other schools. At the meeting, while the other students asked their questions, I remembered that YU offered a “traveling” Immigration Service Center at the end of the semester. As I was thinking about how it would be more convenient to offer this service at the beginning of the semester instead of at the end, it became my turn to speak. I told the minister that it would be better to operate the Immigration Service Center on campus at the start of the semester instead of at the end, because students who have recently arrived in Korea do not know where the nearest immigration office is and have difficulties with language and culture. After I was finished, the head of a department who was sitting next to me complimented me for my suggestion and promised to take it into consideration.

I went back home for the summer and returned to campus on August 20. My two-year visa was nearing expiration, so I went to extend my alien registration. On August 23, I was completely surprised to see an Immigration Service Center on campus. I couldn’t believe that my suggestion had actually been taken seriously. I believe the same thing about Korea now that I did 10 years ago: that Korea has developed into the country it is today because of its commitment to being a true democracy. In this type of democratic system, even the opinion of a foreign student is worthy of respect.

I remember this incident fondly whenever I think of my years in Korea. Thanks to Kevin recommending me for that meeting, I met and spoke with the Minister of Justice and in doing so was able to help—albeit in a very small way—my fellow study-abroad students.

Kevin took the time to listen to each foreign student and help solve our problems, no matter how complicated. I’m sure that all of the foreign students who had the privilege of knowing Kevin returned to their home countries with a good impression of Korea that they’ve kept in their hearts today along with good memories of life at the university.

Kevin arranged for me to participate in wonderful field trips to many parts of Korea (Daegu, Busan, Jeollanam-do, etc.) that I would not have been able to visit on my own. Even now, 10 years later, I talk to Kevin occasionally on Facebook. Each time, I feel like I’ve gone back in time to my student days. The world is still suffering because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

When this situation ends and we are once again free to travel, I am going to visit Korea, which, in my youth, gave me many beautiful memories as well as academic learning. I will make sure to visit my alma mater, Yonsei University, and, of course, Kevin! I’m praying that this day comes quickly. Until then, stay safe and healthy, Kevin! Thank you for everything!

저는 연세대학교 경영학과 09학번, 파란 하늘과 넓은 초원의 나라 몽골 유하가생 덜거르수랭입니다. 이러한 좋은 기회를 통해 유학 시절 가장 큰 의지가 되어주신 우리 KEVIN 선생님께 감사의 마음을 전하고 싶습니다. 낯선 언어와 낯선 환경에서 공부하는 외국인 학생들이 한국에 잘 적응할 수 있도록 항상 신경 써주시고, 업무가 바쁘신 가운데도 멘토를 해주시고, 가끔은 우리한테 친형, 친오빠처럼 위로도 해주신 우리의 천사 같은 KEVIN (손성문) 선생님께 2009학번 동기들을 비롯한 연세대학교의 모든 정부 초정 장학생들을 대표하여 감사의 마음을 전하고 싶습니다. 똑똑한 한국 학생들과 경쟁해 좋은 학점을 받기 위해 노력하면서 스트레스로 지쳤던 우리에게 기말고사 기간에 해주셨던 선생님의 말씀들이 아직도 생생히 기억납니다. 그중에서도 "지금은 너무 피곤하겠지만 나만 힘들다고 생각하지 말고, 서로 돕고 격려하면서 편한 마음으로 잘해봐라", '내 힘들다'를 거꾸로 읽으면 '다들 힘내'가 된다"는 말씀은 정말 큰 위로가 되었었습니다.

글로는 다 표현할 수 없지만, 저희에게 늘 힘이 되어주신 선생님께 감사합니다.
항상 건강하시고, 하시는 일과 가정에 행복이 넘치기를 기원합니다.

My name is Dolgosuren. I graduated from Yonsei University (School of Business) in 2009. I am from Mongolia, a country that is known for its blue sky and wide plains. I want to take this wonderful opportunity to thank Kevin, my mainstay during my time in Korea, for everything that he did for me and other foreign students. He always tried to help foreign students adjust to an unfamiliar language and environment, mentored students even though he was very busy most of the time, and gave life advice, just like an older brother would. On behalf of all GKS students who were at YU in 2008–09, I would like to thank Kevin (Sohn Jung-mun) for being an angel and our biggest source of support. I still remember the advice he gave each semester during the finals period, when we were exhausted from competing with the smart Korean students and trying to get good grades. Two of the things he said—“I know you’re really tired now, but don’t think only of yourself. Help one another and try to keep a calm state of mind,” and “The Korean words for ‘I’m exhausted’ mean ‘Let’s keep going’ when written backwards”—were particularly helpful in getting me through many difficult moments.

I cannot express everything I would like to say in this letter. Nonetheless, I hope that Kevin knows how much he means to us.
Stay healthy, Kevin! I hope things are going well for you professionally and with your family.
