▶ A journey toward multicultural understanding and self-discovery

저에게 대한민국 정부초청장학프로그램은 문화에 대한 이해와 자기 발견을 위해 매우 중요한 의미를 가지는 과정이었습니다. 저는 미국에서 태어나고 자란 한국계 미국 혼혈인으로 어머니와 외할머니로부터 배운 독특한 한국 문화와 함께 성장했습니다. 하지만 한국어가 유창하지도 않았고, 한국에 살아 본 적도 없었으며, 또한 제가 추구하는 지식의 깊이에도 도달하지 못한 것 같았습니다.

대학에서 동아시아학을 전공할 때까지도 저는 곧 시작될 인생을 바꾸는 경험에 준비되어 있지 않았습니다. 해외에서의 생활, 그리고 한국 사회에 완전히 몰입한 생활은 한마디로 대변신이었습니다! 부산에서 지내는 동안 중하급이었던 저의 한국어 실력은 1년 만에 유창하다고 할 만한 수준까지 발전하였습니다. 마침내 어머니와 어머니의 모국어로 대화를 나눌 수 있게 된 저는 어머니의 배경이 제게 얼마나 큰 의미가 되었는지 보여줄 수 있어서 너무 뿌듯했습니다. 나중에 깨달은 것이지만, 결국 어머니의 문화는 곧 제 문화였습니다.

그 후 서울에서 연세대학교 국제학대학원 재학 중에 다문화 한국과 민족 정체성 에 관한 인터뷰 기반 연구를 수행할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 이 과정에서 한-중, 한-러, 한-미, 기타 한국계 이주자 집단(diaspora)과 직접 대화하면서 우리 사이에 존재하는 다양성의 수준을 알게 되었으며, 우리 모두는 한국에서 자신을 찾기 위해 노력하면서 미래에는 다양한 문화가 보다 공존하는 사회가 되기를 희망하고 있었습니다. 한국 정부 장학금 프로그램의 도움이 없었다면 지금처럼 저에 대한 정체성을 충분히 이해하지 못했을 것이며, 한국인을 비롯해 다른 국적을 가진 많은 사람들과 연결되지 않았을 지도 모릅니다.

프로그램이 끝난 후에도 저는 3년 동안 한국에 더 체류하였습니다. 그러면서 제 자신이 방문객이나 여행자가 아닌 거주자처럼 느껴졌습니다. 한국에서 지낸 6년은 늘 좋은 추억으로 기억될 것입니다. 서울의 구불구불한 골목길, 활기찬 카페 문화, 늘 변화하는 패션 트렌드. 이 모두가 아직도 마음 속에 자리잡고 있습니다. 대한민국 정부초청장학프로그램을 통해 사귄 친구들은 제 인생에서 만난 최고의 사람들이며, 멀리 떨어져 있지만 계속해서 서로에게 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 정부초청장학프로그램이 가져다준 기회에 대해 NIIED에 감사드리며, 앞으로도 여러 문화에 걸친 다양한 관계 육성의 가치와 중요성을 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다.

For me, the Korean Government Scholarship Program was a deeply personal pathway to both cultural understanding and self-discovery. As a multiracial Korean born and raised in the US, I grew up with a unique version of Korean culture that I learned through my mom and grandmother. However, I wasn’t fluent in the Korean language, had never lived in the country, and didn’t feel like I had achieved the depth of knowledge I was looking for.

While I majored in East Asian Studies in college, I wasn’t prepared for the life-changing experience I was about to embark on. Being fully immersed in Korean society and living abroad was, in a word, transformative! In Busan, my Korean language skills went from low intermediate to nearly fluent within a year. I was finally able to have conversations with my mom in her native tongue; I was proud to show her how much her background meant to me. After all, her culture was my culture, even if I was discovering that fact later in my life.

Then, as a student at Yonsei GSIS in Seoul, I was able to conduct interview-based research on co-ethnic and multiracial Korean identity. Speaking directly to Korean-Chinese, Korean-Russian, Korean-American, and other Korean diaspora showed me the level of diversity among us. We all struggled to find ourselves in Korea, yet remained hopeful for a more multicultural future. Without the help of the KGSP, I may have never reached the fulfilling understanding of my own identity that I have now. I may have never connected with so many other people, both Korean and foreign.

After the program ended, I stayed in Korea for three more years, and truly felt like a resident (not a visitor or traveler). I’ll always have fond memories of those six years I lived abroad. Seoul’s winding alleyways, vibrant café culture, and always changing fashion trends are still etched in my mind. The KGSP friends I made in Korea are some of the best people I’ve met in my life, who continue to be a positive influence, despite the distance between us. I’m grateful to NIIED for the opportunities that the KGSP opened up, and will never forget the value and importance of fostering diverse, cross-cultural relationships.

안녕하십니까? 저는 미국에서 온 와이엇입니다. 저는 2012부터 2014까지 GKS 학생이었습니다. 아쉽게도 개인적인 사정으로 일찍 미국으로 귀국해야 해서 GKS 석사 프로그램을 졸업하지 못했지만 그 시간 동안 많이 배우고 아주 깊은 추억이 많았습니다.

　한국에서 여름 방학 때, 한국 시골에서 공사하는 경험 하나 있었습니다. 건축과 공사하는 그룹을 만나게 되었는데 이름은 "건축 공방 무"라고 했고 "무"로 불렀습니다. 이 그룹이 짓는 건물들의 디자인이 저에게 관심 많았습니다. 왜냐하면 저의 전공은 식품 자원 경제이었는데 무의 디자인들 주변 자원을 사용하여 건물을 짓는 방법을 있었습니다. 이 경험 갖고 있게 올해 3월부터 저의 집에서 특별한 프로젝트를 시작했습니다. 오래된 나무 잘아야 됐는데 나무를 비우고 나무 주의에 원에 트리 하우스를 만들려고 했습니다. "무"한테서 배운 방법을 생각하면서 옆에서부터 건물의 디자인은 "無" 모양으로 만들었습니다.

게다가 건물 이름은 "나무"인데 의미 두 가지 있다: "나무"와 "나 無" 집을 짓는 작업은 아직 진행 중이며 아마 한달 후에 끝날 것 같습니다. 끝나면 프로젝트를 설명하는 비디오를 만들 계획 있고 "무"에게 보내려고 합니다. 코로나바이러스 때문에 언제 다시 한국에 갈 수 있는지 몰라서 이 프로젝트의 목표 중 하나는 할 수 있는 만큼 한국에 대한 연결을 다른 사람과의 관계를 유지하는 것입니다. 힘든 시간에도 저 같은 GKS Alumni들 위해 수고해 주셔서 감사합니다!

Hello! My name is Wyatt, and I am from the United States. I was a GKS student from 2012 until 2014. Unfortunately, I did not finish my master’s degree through GKS because I had to return to the US for personal reasons. Nevertheless, I learned a lot during my time in Korea and made many good memories.

One year, during summer vacation, I had the chance to participate in a construction project in a rural village. I worked with an architecture/construction group whose name was “Architecture Workshop Moo,” or just “Moo” for short. I was very interested in the group’s building designs, which were created utilizing local resources, because this type of design was directly related to my major—food and resource economics. In March, after I returned home, I began a special project based on my experience with Moo. I cut old trees; more specifically, I hollowed out the inside of a tree and made a cylindrical “tree house.” Using the methods I learned from Moo, I designed the house in the shape of the Chinese character “Moo” (無). The tree house is named “Namu,” which is the Korean word for “tree,” and can also be translated as “me, nothing.”

I am still building the house, but I think it will be done in about a month. Once I finish, I will make a video explaining the project and send it to Moo. I’m not sure when I’ll be able to go to Korea again because of COVID-19, but I want to maintain the relationships with Korea and the people there that were created through this project. Hi! Salom! Привет! 안녕!

저는 2014년부터 2017년까지 대한민국 정부초청장학프로그램에 참여한 우즈베키스탄 사마르칸트에서 온 Khurshid입니다. 프로그램을 통해 저는 선문대학교 어학 과정을 거쳐 대구에 있는 계명대학교에서 석사 과정을 밟았습니다. 졸업 후에는 한국계 은행에서 2년 동안 국제 마케팅을 맡아 근무하다가 지금은 서울에 살면서 해외영업 업무를 담당하고 있습니다. 그리고 GKS 동문회의 이사직도 맡고 있습니다.

제게는 GKS 프로그램에 대한 즐거운 추억들이 많지만, 이 글에서는 이 프로그램이 현재 제가 있기까지 어떤 역할을 했는지에 대한 제 생각을 공유하고 싶습니다.

6년 전 처음 프로그램을 시작하던 때에는(당시의 프로그램명은 KGSP였음) 한국 친구들을 많이 사귀겠다는 생각은 했지만, 한국에 있는 외국 친구들과 돈독한 유대감을 형성하리라라고는 생각하지 못했습니다. 프로그램을 통해 만난 친구들 중 일부는 졸업 후 각자의 나라로 귀국했고, 일부는 한국에 남아 취업을 하거나 사업을 시작했습니다. 그들은 대한민국 최고의 장학금을 받은 빛나는 인재들입니다. 각기 다른 배경에도 불구하고 한국 생활이라는 공통된 경험과 한국에 감사하는 마음을 가지고 있었기에 우리는 쉽게 친해질 수 있었습니다. 그래서 필요한 경우가 생기면 서로 전화를 하거나 메시지를 보내서 “내가 하고 있는 프로젝트가 있는데 혹시 관심 있어? 아니면 관심 있을 만 한 사람이 있을까?”라고 묻거나, “너희 나라에 파트너/상품이 필요한데 좀 도와줄래?”, “이게 네 전문분야잖아. 좀 조언해 줄 수 있어?” 또는 "나 지금 구직 중인데, 아는 일자리가 있으면 좀 알려줘.‘라고 부탁하기도 합니다. 이로써 더 빠른 시간 안에 문제를 해결할 수 있게 되는 거죠. 그리고 지금은 팬데믹으로인해 거의 드물게 되었지만, 주말에 간단히 모여서 놀 수도 있습니다.

아시다시피 국립국제교육원은 전 세계의 GKS 동문을 대상으로 국가별 현지동문회 결성과 동문회 활동을 지원하고 있습니다. 그리고 GKS 동문 네트워크 구축을 위해 한국에 체류 중인 몇 명의 동문들이 2018년 5월부터 이사회 멤버로 자발적으로 활동하고 있는데 저도 이 일에 함께할 수 있어 기쁩니다. 모두 각자의 생활로 바쁘지만, 그 가운데 각자가 조금씩 노력한 결과 네트워크가 활성화되었습니다. 우리는 서로 연락을 지속하고 있으며, 후배 GKS를 위해 조언을 해주기도 합니다. 그리고 기회가 될 때면 자원 봉사 및 기부 행사를 주최해서 감사의 마음을 한국 사회에 보답하고 있는데 이것을 보다 정기적으로, 그리고 더 큰 규모로 만들기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.

I am Khurshid from Samarkand, Uzbekistan. GKS batch 2014~2017. I studied in the language course of Sunmoon University and pursued a master's in Keimyung University, Daegu. After graduation, I worked in international marketing for one of the Korean banks over 2 years. Currently I'm in overseas sales. Based in Seoul. I'm also a board member of GKS Alumni Korea association.

I have lots of past sweet memories related with GKS program, but in this post I'd like to share my thoughts about what role the program plays in my life today.
6 years ago, when I was first accepted to the program (when it was still called KGSP), I thought I'd make lots of Korean friends, but never expected I'd have stronger bonds with many international friends in Korea. Some of them returned to their countries after graduation and some started their careers or businesses in Korea. They are the bright minds of their countries who were granted one of the best scholarships that Korea offers. These are the people who come from totally different backgrounds, but have similar Korean life experiences and gratitude towards Korea. So we easily get along. We can just call or message each other and say 'hey listen! I'm working on a project, would you be interested or know someone who could be interested' or 'I need partners/goods from your country, can you help to find' or 'you are an expert on this or that field, can you give me an advice' or 'I'm looking for a job, let me know if you're aware of vacancies'. And at the end, problems are solved in shorter time! Or we can just simply gather on a weekend to hang out although it's very rare now, in times of pandemic.

As we know, NIIED has been uniting GKS alumni all over the world into associations in many countries. Accordingly, a few alumni, as board members, have been voluntarily working on building GKS Alumni network in Korea since May of 2018. And I'm happy to be part of it. Although everyone is busy with their own life, the network has been active thanks to little efforts each has put in. We do this not only to be in touch with each other, but also to guide younger GKS generations and, with much sincerity, to pay back to Korean society through volunteering and donation events we organize when it's possible. We aim to do so more regularly and on a larger scale.

저는 인도에서 온 콘키 스라반 쿠마르라고 합니다.
한국정부장학프로그램(KGSP)으로 장학금을 받아 제주대학교 전자공학분야 박사학위과정을 무사히 끝마칠 수 있어 기쁘고 자랑스러우며 여러 정부 관계자분께 감사의 말씀 전합니다.

저는 2015년 8월달에 한국에 왔습니다. 처음 1년 동안은 부산에 있는 동서대학교에서 어학연수를 했습니다. 낯선 한국어를 배우는 것이 매우 어려웠지만 malika namju yoon 선생님이 한국어 읽기, 쓰기, 말하기에 대해 많은 도움을 주셨고, 어학연수기간 동안 동서대학교 교직원이 생활 편의 등 많은 도움을 주셨습니다. 일년 간의 어학연수프로그램은 한국 사람들에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 갖고 편견을 줄여주는 계기가 되었습니다. 또한 한국 문화와 전통에 대해 더 잘 이해할 수 있도록 해 주었습니다. 한국어에 대한 깊은 열정과 사랑으로 공부하다보니 짧은 시간에 토픽(TOPIK) 3급을 받을 수 있었습니다.

한국은 체계적이고 잘 구현된 법과 규정을 가진 아름다운 나라로 시민의 자유와 발전된 민주주의를 누릴 수 있도록 해 주었습니다. 그리고 국적, 종교, 피부색, 언어가 다른 모든 사람들에게도 친절히 도움을 주는 한국사람들은 도착한 첫날부터 나에게 깊은 인상을 주었습니다. 나는 단일 민족으로 구성된 한국사회에 동화되는 독특한 경험을 체험하였습니다. 집을 떠나는 것은 도전적이고 힘든 시간이었지만 부산에서의 좋은 친구를 사귀게 되어 기뻤습니다. 2016년 9월 제주대학교에서 박사과정을 시작했습니다. 세계화 교육을 지향하는 제주대학교는 활기차고 역동적인 연구환경을 제공해 주었습니다. 무엇보다 나의 지도교수님이신 김경연 교수님께서는 학위과정 내내 인내심과 동기부여를 위한 끊임없는 지지를 주었습니다. 그리고 제주에서의 생활이 편안할 수 있도록 많은 도움을 주셨습니다.

KGSP 장학금 지원은 학업과 연구에 매진할 수 있도록 해 주었습니다. 그 덕택에 지난 2017년 12월 NIIED에서 KGSP 학업성적 우수상을 받았습니다. 그것은 나에게 박사학위를 마칠 수 있는 자신감을 주었고 또한 전자공학 분야의 훌륭한 연구자가 되려는 나의 목표에 한 걸음 더 다가설 수 있도록 하였습니다.

마지막으로 국립국제교육원(NIIED) 한국정부장학프로그램(KGSP) 지원에 대해 어떻게 감사의 말씀을 전해야 할지 잘 모르겠습니다. 앞으로 제게 인도와 한국의 관계발전에 도움을 줄 수 있는 기회가 있기를 기대해 봅니다.

Hello, everyone!

My name is Konki Sravan Kumar. I’m from India.
I am grateful and proud to have completed my Ph.D. in electronic engineering at Jeju National University through the Korea Government Scholarship Program. I would like to thank all of the government workers who helped me obtain this scholarship.

I first came to Korea in August 2015. I spent my first year learning Korean at Dongseo University (Busan). Learning Korean was very difficult, but Ms. Malika Namju Yoon helped me a lot with my basic reading, writing, and speaking skills. There was also an employee of Dongseo University who helped me with various aspects of life at the university. The biggest thing I gained from my one-year language study was a positive view of Koreans. I also gained a better understanding of Korean traditions and culture. Thanks to everyone who assisted me, I became interested in studying Korean and was able to pass the TOPIK Level 3 test relatively quickly.

Korea is a beautiful country that has a well-organized, well-implemented legal system that allows citizens to enjoy freedom and an advanced system of democracy. I was especially impressed, from my first day in Korea, by the willingness of Koreans to help someone of a different nationality, religion, skin color, and language. I had the unique experience of being able to assimilate into Korea’s “mono-ethnic” society. It was hard to leave home and take on new challenges, but nevertheless, I was happy to make many good friends in Busan.

I began the Ph.D. program at Jeju National University in September 2016. JNU, which takes globalization very seriously and incorporates it into every aspect of its educational program, provided me with a dynamic, energetic research environment. Above all, Professor Kim Kyeong-yeon, my thesis advisor, helped me stay inspired and focused throughout the Ph.D. program. He also did a lot to make sure that I didn’t have any problems living on Jeju-do.

The support provided by the KGSP allowed me to focus completely on academics and research. Thanks to this scholarship, I received the KGSP Outstanding GPA Award from the NIIED in December 2017. This gave me the confidence to complete my Ph.D. degree, bringing me one step closer to my goal of becoming a skilled researcher in electronic engineering.

I have no words to describe how thankful I am for the NIIED’s KGSP support. If given the chance, I would be more than happy to help create a mutually beneficial relationship between India and Korea.
