2013년부터 2017년까지, GKS 대학원 장학생으로서의 한국생활은 결코 쉽지 않은 과정이었습니다. 고국을 떠나 사랑하는 사람들과 떨어져서 보낸 가장 긴 시간이었던 그 4년은 삶을 변화시키는 도전과 경험으로 가득 차 있었으며, 지금의 저를 만들었습니다. 힘든 시간이었지만 제가 다니던 서울대학교의 GKS 직원들의 끊임없는 도움 덕분에 긴 여정에서 결실을 맺을 수 있었습니다.

서울대학교 국제협력부의 이유미 선생님을 만난 것은 기대하지 못했던 큰 축복이었습니다. 선생님은 GKS 문제, 개인적 문제를 가리지 않고 우리의 모든 질문과 요청에 도움을 주었습니다. 이유미 선생님은 서울대학교의 ‘큰 언니’였습니다. 한국생활 중에 기복을 겪을 때면 저는 선생님에게 메시지를 보냈고, 학위 프로그램에 대해 걱정할 때마다 선생님은 늘 제가 최선을 다할 수 있도록 도와주었습니다. 이처럼 모든 GKS 학생들을 아낌없이 보살펴주던 선생님이 GKS 코디네이터 자리를 떠나 해외 유학을 간다는 메시지를 보내왔을 때 저는 너무도 슬펐습니다. 유미 씨, 아니 유미 언니라고 불러야 할까요, 그녀는 제 동지이자 멘토였습니다. 이유미 선생님은 GKS 행사 기간 중에 제가 입원해 있을 때 학교로 복귀할 때까지 저를 가장 많이 도와주고 보살펴 준 사람이었습니다. 선생님이 주신 모든 도움에 대한 감사의 마음을 영원히 간직할 것입다. 선생님이 없었다면 GKS 프로그램은 상상 이상으로 훨씬 어려웠을 것입니다. 이제 비록 학위를 받고 졸업했지만, 우리를 이어주는 다리는 끊어지지 않았다고 믿습니다. 멀리서도 소중히 여겨야 할 멋진 우정이기 때문입니다. 팬데믹 이후 다시 한국을 방문할 기회가 있다면 꼭 이유미 선생님을 만날 것입니다.

모든 도움과 우정에 대해 유미 언니에게 감사드립니다. 제게 선생님은 서울대 최고의 GKS 코디네이터로 남을 것입니다. 포옹과 키스를 보냅니다. 우리가 다시 만날 날을 고대하며…

Living in Korea as a GKS Graduate Program student from 2013 to 2017 was never an easy journey for me. It was the longest time I spent my time outside my home country and away from my loved ones. I can say that indeed it was full of life changing challenges and experiences that made me who I am today. It was a tough time but through the endless help of the GKS staffs from my university (Seoul National University), my journey was a fruitful one.

Meeting Ms Lee Yumi of SNU International Office was a blessing in disguise. She assisted us with all our queries and needs, be it related to GKS or personal matters. She was literally and figuratively my big sister in SNU. Whenever I have my ups and down she is just one Kakao message away. Whenever I have concern regarding my degree program, she always assisted me to be best of her ability. I remember her as someone who always take good care of all GKS students so it was a saddening news for me when she personally messaged me that she will be stepping down from her post as the GKS coordinator to be able to further pursue her studies abroad. Ms Yumi or should I say Yumi 언니 was my comrade and mentor. One time when I was hospitalized during a GKS event, she was the first one who offered a helping hand and take good care of me until we return to our school. I am forever grateful for all her help. I personally think that without her my GKS stay in SNU will be a lot harder than I imagine it to be. Although I already graduated from my degree, we never burn bridges. It was a nice friendship that we cherish even in a distant. If ever I will have a chance to visit Korea again after the pandemic, surely will include meeting Lee Yumi 언니 to the list of people I will meet.

Thank you Yumi 언니 for all the assistance and for the friendship that we made. You will forever be the best GKS coordinator for all SNU students most especially to me. Sending you hugs and kisses. Until we meet again.
