1. Brief Introduction

Hello, I'm Aruzhan from Kazakhstan, and you can call me Aru. I work at the intersection of language, technology, and human behavior, and I'm especially interested in how Al reshapes the way we communicate and think.
I've spent the past year and a half in Korea, and it has been a truly transformative experience. For me it is both an honor and a responsibility to be a GKS scholar!

안녕하세요, 저는 카자흐스탄 출신 아루잔이며 '아루(Aru)'라고 불러주셔도 됩니다. 저는 언어, 기술,
그리고 인간의 행동이 만나는 지점에서 활동하고 있으며, 특히 AI가 우리의 소통 방식과 사고방식을 어떻게 변화시키는지에 큰 관심을 가지고 있습니다.
한국에서 지난 1년 반 동안 지내며 정말 큰 변화를 경험했고, 저에게 GKS 장학생이라는 것은 큰 영광이자 동시에 책임이라고 생각합니다.

2. GKS Year, University, Major

I am a 2024 GKS scholar currently studying at KAIST. My major is Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences, where I explore the intersection of multilingualism and Al, particularly large language models.

저는 2024년 GKS 장학생으로 현재 KAIST에서 공부하고 있습니다. 전공은 디지털 인문학 및 계산 사회과학(Digital Humanities and Computational Social Sciences)으로, 특히 다국어 환경과 AI, 그리고 대형 언어 모델(Large Language Models)의 접점에 대해 연구하고 있습니다.

3. How did the GKS scholarship help you with your academic goals? What resources or opportunities did you take advantage of during your time in Korea?

GKS gave me the freedom to fully commit to my academic path without distraction. That freedom allowed me to think more deeply, take risks in my research, and explore interdisciplinary ideas that I might not have otherwise pursued. It shifted my focus from simply studying to building something meaningful.
One of the most defining parts of my journey was the language year. I studied at Paichai University, where I had an incredible teacher who supported me throughout the process, and I was able to reach Level 5 within a year. Beyond the language itself, that year gave me something even more valuable. I met people from all over the world who quickly became like family. We shared challenges, growth, and unforgettable experiences together, and I am still in touch with many of them today.
In addition, I have been actively involved as a KAIST ambassador, promoting both KAIST and the GKS program. Through this role, I have had the opportunity to share my experience, participate in outreach activities, and connect with a broader international community.
Overall, GKS opened doors not only academically, but also socially and professionally. From conferences and public-facing opportunities to cultural immersion and community building, this experience has shaped me not only as a student, but as a person

3. GKS 장학금이 학업 목표 달성에 어떤 도움을 주었나요? 한국에서 어떤 자원이나 기회를 활용 하셨나요?
GKS는 제가 학업에 온전히 집중할 수 있는 자유를 주었습니다. 이러한 환경 덕분에 더 깊이 사고하고 연구에서 새로운 시도를 하며, 기존에는 도전하지 못했을 융합적인 아이디어를 탐구할 수 있었습니다. 단순히 공부하는 것을 넘어, 의미 있는 것을 만들어가는 방향으로 제 시야를 확장시켜 주었습니다.
특히 가장 인상 깊었던 경험 중 하나는 한국어 연수 기간이었습니다. 배재대학교에서 공부하며 훌륭한 선생님의 지원 속에 1년 만에 5급까지 도달할 수 있었습니다. 이 기간 동안 얻은 가장 큰 자산은 언어뿐만 아니라, 전 세계에서 온 친구들이었습니다. 우리는 서로의 도전과 성장의 과정을 함께하며 가족 같은 관계가 되었고, 지금도 많은 친구들과 계속 연락을 이어가고 있습니다.
또한 KAIST 홍보대사로 활동하며 학교와 GKS 프로그램을 알리는 역할도 맡고 있습니다.
이를 통해 제 경험을 공유하고 다양한 대외 활동에 참여하며 더 넓은 국제 커뮤니티와 소통할 수 있었습니다.
이처럼 GKS는 학문적 기회뿐만 아니라 사회적, 그리고 진로적인 측면에서도 새로운 가능성을 열어주었으며,
저를 한 명의 학생을 넘어 한 사람으로서 성장하게 만든 소중한 경험이었습니다.

4. Have you been able to use the skills or knowledge you gained in Korea in your career so far?

I haven't officially started my career yet, but I see this experience as a defining starting point.
GKS has already reshaped how I think, how I approach complexity, and how I communicate across cultures. It gave me not just knowledge, but direction.
I believe this will become a turning point that shapes my early career and the trajectory that follows
4. 한국에서 배운 기술이나 지식을 현재 커리어에 활용하고 있나요?
아직 본격적인 커리어를 시작한 단계는 아니지만, 이 경험이 제 인생에서 중요한 출발점이 될 것이라고 생각합니다. GKS를 통해 사고하는 방식, 복잡한 문제에 접근하는 태도, 그리고 다양한 문화 속에서 소통하는 능력이 크게 변화했습니다. 단순한 지식을 넘어 방향성을 제시해준 경험이었습니다.
이 경험은 앞으로의 커리어와 삶의 방향을 결정짓는 중요한 전환점이 될 것이라고 믿습니다.

5. What role has the GKS alumni network played in your life?

What stands out about GKS is that it does not end when the scholarship ends.
It creates a global community of people who share not only opportunities, but also challenges, growth, and perspective. There is a strong sense of connection and mutual support. I see the alumni network not just as a resource, but as a lifelong ecosystem that continues to grow with you.
5. GKS 동문 네트워크는 당신의 삶에 어떤 역할을 했나요?
GKS의 가장 큰 특징 중 하나는 장학금이 끝난 이후에도 그 연결이 이어진다는 점이라고 생각합니다. GKS는 단순한 프로그램을 넘어, 기회와 도전, 성장과 관점을 공유하는 글로벌 커뮤니티를 형성합니다. 강한 유대감과 상호 지원의 문화가 존재하며, 동문 네트워크는 단순한 자원을 넘어 평생 함께 성장하는 하나의 생태계라고 생각합니다

6. Do you think the GKS program has evolved over the years? How could it improve?

GKS has clearly evolved into a more global and forward-looking program. It has also become more competitive over time, which I think is completely natural as more talented students from around the world apply.
Moving forward, I see strong potential in deepening connections between academia, industry, and interdisciplinary research, especially in fast-moving fields like Al.
Creating more structured platforms for collaboration and increasing the visibility of scholars' work could further amplify the global impact of the program
6. GKS 프로그램이 시간이 지나며 변화했다고 느끼시나요? 앞으로 어떤 방향으로 발전하면 좋을 까요?
GKS는 점점 더 글로벌하고 미래지향적인 프로그램으로 발전하고 있다고 생각합니다.
또한 전 세계에서 우수한 인재들이 지원하면서 경쟁력도 자연스럽게 높아지고 있습니다.
앞으로는 특히 AI와 같은 빠르게 변화하는 분야에서 학문, 산업, 그리고 융합 연구 간의 연결을 더욱 강화할 필요가 있다고 봅니다. 또한 장학생들의 연구와 활동을 더 널리 알릴 수 있는 플랫폼을 마련하고, 협업 기회를 체계적으로 확대한다면 프로그램의 글로벌 영향력이 더욱 커질 것입니다.

7. What would you say to someone considering applying for GKS?

I would say that hesitation often means that something truly matters to you.
Stepping into a new country and a new environment is not easy. It challenges you in ways you cannot fully predict. But that is exactly where real growth begins.
For me, it started with the language year, where I met people from all over the world who quickly became like family. That experience made me realize that GKS is not just about studying abroad, but about becoming part of something much bigger than yourself.
GKS is not just financial support. It is an experience that expands your perspective, reshapes your identity, and connects you to a global community.
You begin to think beyond borders, not just as a student, but as a global thinker and a global player.
For many, including myself, it becomes a turning point, a moment that sets everything else in motion. So if you are considering it, take the leap.

8. How did you prepare for life in Korea? Any challenges or cultural shocks?

Before coming to Korea, I prepared in practical ways by learning basic Korean and understanding the culture. But I also prepared emotionally.
I made sure to spend time with my close ones and fully appreciate home, knowing that I was about to step into something completely new.
Of course, there were cultural shocks, especially in communication styles and academic expectations. But over time, those challenges became some of the most valuable learning experiences.
Adapting to a new environment teaches you resilience, perspective, and self-awareness in a way nothing else can.
8. 한국에 오기 전 어떤 준비를 했나요? 문화적 충격이나 어려움은 있었나요?
한국에 오기 전에는 기본적인 한국어와 문화를 배우며 실질적인 준비를 했고, 동시에 정서적인 준비도 중요하게 생각했습니다. 새로운 환경으로 나아가기 전 가족과의 시간을 충분히 보내며 마음의 준비를 했습니다. 물론 초기에는 의사소통 방식과 학업 환경에서 문화적 차이를 느끼기도 했습니다. 하지만 이러한 경험들은 시간이
지나면서 가장 값진 배움으로 남았습니다.
새로운 환경에 적응하는 과정은 회복탄력성과 시야, 그리고 자기 이해를 깊이 있게 만들어준다고 생각합니다.

9. What advice would you give to future GKS applicants?

My biggest advice is to stay authentic.
Do not try to fit into what you think they are looking for. Instead, show who you are, what drives you, and where you want to go.
GKS is not looking for perfect candidates. It is looking for individuals with curiosity, direction, and a sense of purpose.
Be honest about your story, clear about your goals, and intentional about the impact you want to create.
And as the world and research continue to evolve, focus on what genuinely excites you. Follow that curiosity, and build your path with purpose.

9. 앞으로 GKS 지원자들에게 해주고 싶은 조언은 무엇인가요?
가장 중요한 것은 '자신다움'을 유지하는 것입니다
누군가의 기준에 맞추려고 하기보다, 내가 어떤 사람인지, 무엇에 열정을 느끼는지, 어디로 나아가고 싶은지를 솔직하게 보여주는 것이 중요합니다.
GKS는 완벽한 지원자를 찾는 것이 아니라, 호기심과 방향성, 그리고 목적의식을 가진 사람을 찾고 있다고 생각합니다. 자신의 이야기에 진정성을 담고, 목표를 명확히 하며, 어떤 영향을 만들어가고 싶은지 고민해 보세요.
그리고 무엇보다 자신이 진심으로 흥미를 느끼는 분야를 따라가며 의미 있는 길을 만들어 가시길 바랍니다.
