My name is Sadulla Ibragimov, and I am from Uzbekistan. Currently, I serve as a Program Manager at the KOICA Uzbekistan office, where I help facilitate development cooperation between our two nations

I was a GKS scholar from 2014 to 2019. I started with a Korean language course at Sun Moon University, followed by a bachelor's degree in food service management at Kyung Hee University.

scholarship 3. How did the GKS help you with your academic goals? What resources or opportunities did you take advantage of during your time in Korea?

The GKS scholarship was the foundation of my academic success. It allowed me to focus entirely on my studies without financial worry, but the real value was in the opportunities outside the classroom. I made sure to step off-campus and engage with the professional world. I took advantage of various programs and internships with global leaders like Samsung, Naver, and KT, and I even completed an internship with the Seoul City Government. These experiences gave me a practical perspective that a textbook simply couldn't provide.

3. GKS 장학금이 학업 목표 달성에 어떤 도움을 주었나요? 한국에서 어떤 자원이나 기회를 활용 하셨나요?
GKS 장학금은 제 학업 성공의 기반이었습니다. 경제적 부담 없이 학업에 집중할 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 교실 밖에서의 다양한 기회가 더욱 큰 가치를 주었습니다. 저는 교외 활동에도 적극적으로 참여하며 실무 경험을 쌓고자 노력했습니다. 삼성, 네이버, KT와 같은 글로벌 기업에서 진행하는 다양한 프로그램과 인턴십에 참여했으며, 서울시청에서도 인턴십을 수행했습니다. 이러한 경험들은 교과서만으로는 얻을 수 없는 실질적인 시각을 길러주었습니다

4. Have you been able to use the skills or knowledge you gained in Korea in your career so far?

Absolutely. Beyond the technical basics of management and teamwork, Korea taught me "soft skills" that are essential in my current role. I learned the value of consistency, passion, and creative problem-solving. My internship experiences in Korea were particularly vital; they gave me a "cultural bridge" that helps me work effectively within a Korean government organization today.
4. 한국에서 배운 기술이나 지식을 현재 커리어에 활용하고 있나요?
물론입니다. 관리와 팀워크에 대한 기본적인 역량뿐만 아니라, 한국에서 배운 '소프트 스킬'이 현재 업무에 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 꾸준함, 열정, 창의적인 문제 해결 능력의 중요성을 배웠습니다.
특히 한국에서의 인턴 경험은 매우 큰 자산이 되었으며, 현재 한국 정부기관과 협력하는 과정에서 문화적 가교 역할을 할 수 있게 해주었습니다.

5. What role has the GKS alumni network played in your life after graduation, if any?

The GKS alumni network has been a fantastic resource for professional growth. It has allowed me to connect with seniors who shared invaluable career insights and mentorship. Today, that network has evolved into a collaborative community where we implement joint projects and support one another. We also take pride in guiding newly appointed scholars to ensure they have a smooth transition to life in Korea.
5. 졸업 이후 GKS 동문 네트워크는 당신의 삶에 어떤 역할을 했나요?
GKS 동문 네트워크는 제 전문적인 성장에 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 선배들과의 교류를 통해 소중한 커리어 조언과 멘토링을 받을 수 있었고, 현재는 공동 프로젝트를 진행하며 서로를 지원하는 협력적인 커뮤니티로 발전했습니다. 또한, 새롭게 선발된 장학생들이 한국 생활에 잘 적응할 수 있도록 돕는 데에도 자부심을 느끼고 있습니다.

6. Do you think the GKS program has evolved over the years? In what ways could it improve or adapt to the needs of future scholars?

Yes, the program is becoming more community-oriented. I see much more effort being put into connecting current scholars with graduates, which creates a stronger sense of belonging. Information sharing has also improved significantly. I'm personally trying to contribute to this evolution by managing a digital channel with over 5,500 followers, where I share tips and updates about the scholarship to help the next generation of applicants.
6. GKS 프로그램이 시간이 지나며 변화했다고 느끼시나요? 앞으로 어떤 방향으로 발전하면 좋을까요?
네, 점점 더 커뮤니티 중심으로 발전하고 있다고 생각합니다. 재학생과 졸업생을 연결하려는 노력이 강화되면서 소속감이 더욱 커지고 있습니다. 또한 정보 공유도 크게 개선되었습니다. 저 역시 이러한 변화에 기여하고자 약 5,500명의 팔로워를 보유한 디지털 채널을 운영하며 장학금 관련 정보와 팁을 공유하고 있습니다.

7. What would you say to someone who is considering applying for the GKS program but is unsure about making the leap to Korea?

I would say: "Don't hesitate-apply!" Moving to Korea through GKS will open an entirely new chapter in your life. If you approach it with an open mind and a strong work ethic, it won't just be a new chapter; it will be a chapter of lasting success and personal transformation.
7. GKS 지원을 고민하는 사람들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있다면?
"망설이지 말고 도전하세요!" GKS를 통해 한국에 오게 된다면 인생의 완전히 새로운 장이 열릴 것입니다. 열린 마음과 성실한 자세로 임한다면, 단순한 새로운 시작을 넘어 지속적인 성공과 성장의 기회가 될 것입니다.

8. How did you prepare for your life in Korea before you arrived? Were there any cultural shocks or challenges you faced?

I prepared by immersing myself in Korean variety shows, which gave me a glimpse into the language, history, and daily life. However, real life still managed to surprise me! I remember a specific "culture shock" on a bus with my Korean friends. In Uzbekistan, it is a basic sign of respect to offer your seat to anyone older. When I tried to give my seat to a gentleman in his 60s, he firmly refused. I was confused and a bit worried I had done something wrong. Later, my friend explained that in Korea, many people in their 60s still feel young and active; they might see the offer of a seat as a suggestion that they look frail or "old." It taught me that the same act of kindness can have very different meanings in different cultures.

8. 한국에 오기 전 어떤 준비를 했나요? 문화적 충격이나 어려움은 있었나요?

한국 예능 프로그램을 보며 언어와 문화, 일상생활을 미리 접하려고 노력했습니다.
하지만 실제 생활은 여전히 놀라움의 연속이었습니다. 특히 기억에 남는 문화적 차이는 버스에서의 경험입니다.
우즈베키스탄에서는 연장자에게 자리를 양보하는 것이 기본적인 예의입니다. 그래서 60대 정도로 보이는 분께 자리를 양보하려 했지만, 단호하게 거절당했습니다. 저는 당황했고 혹시 실례가 된 것은 아닌지 걱정했습니다. 이후 친구를 통해 한국에서는 60대도 여전히 젊고 활동적이라고 생각하기 때문에, 자리를 양보하는 것이 오히려 '늙어 보인다'는 의미로 받아들여질 수 있다는 설명을 들었습니다.
이를 통해 같은 배려 행동도 문화에 따라 다르게 해석될 수 있다는 것을 깨달았습니다.

9. What advice would you give to future GKS applicants?

Define your goal clearly and stay focused on it. You will receive a lot of different advice, but the most important thing is to stay true to yourself and never stop learning. Be passionate, chase your dream with everything you have, and remember that your unique perspective is your greatest strength.
9. 앞으로 GKS 지원자들에게 해주고 싶은 조언은 무엇인가요?
목표를 명확히 설정하고 끝까지 집중하세요. 다양한 조언을 듣게 되겠지만, 가장 중요한 것은 자신을 믿고 꾸준히 배우는 것입니다. 열정을 가지고 꿈을 향해 나아가세요. 그리고 자신의 고유한 시각이 가장 큰 강점이라는 점을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.
