1. Brief Introduction

Hello, my name is Hema, and I was a GKS scholar in Korea from 2006 to 2010.
I began my journey with six months of Korean language training at Kyung Hee University, and then completed my Master's degree in Korean Language and Literature (Korean Language and Culture Education) at Korea University.
After returning to India, I have been teaching Korean language and culture since 2010 at the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Delhi, as well as at several affiliated colleges. I received an Excellence Award at the World Korean Speech Contest held in Hong Kong in 2010. Later, I obtained my MPhil degree in Korean Studies from the University of Delhi in 2012 and completed my PhD in 2021.
I have also worked as a Research Assistant at Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi and have taught Korean language and workplace culture at various institutions, including business schools and Korean companies such as LG and Samsung. In addition, I have served as a coordinator for collaborative projects, including MoUs between Korean institutions and Indian universities. I have delivered over 45 presentations on Korean language education and Korean culture at academic conferences held in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh

1. 간단한 자기소개
안녕하세요. 저는 2006년부터 2010년까지 GKS 장학생으로 한국에서 유학한 헤마 (Hema)입니다.
처음 6개월 동안 경희대학교에서 한국어 연수를 이수한 후, 고려대학교 국어국문학과에서 한국어 문화교육 전공으로 석사 과정을 마쳤습니다.
이후 인도로 돌아와 2010년부터 현재까지 인도 국립 대학교 델리대학교 동아시아학과 및 여러 단과대학에서 한국어와 한국문화를 가르치고 있습니다. 2010년 홍콩에서 개최된 세계 한국어 응변대회에서 우수상을 수상하였고, 2012년에는 델리대학교에서 한국어 전공으로 MPhil 학위를, 2021년에는 박사 학위를 취득했습니다.
또한 델리에 있는 국립대학교 Jamia Millia Islamia에서 연구조교로 근무한 경험이 있으며, 뉴델리소재 경영대학과 LG, 삼성 등 여러 한국 기업에서 한국어 및 한국의 직장 문화를 강의했습니다. 그동안 한국 대사관, 한국 대학, 인도 델리대학교와 교육기관 간의 양해각서(MoU) 체결을 위한 협력 사업에서 코디네이터로 활동했으며, 인도내 (델리대학교, 네루대학교, 자미야 대학교, 마니푸르대학교와 스리랑카와 방글라데쉬에 있는 대학교에서 개최된 학술대회에서도 한국어 교육과 한국문화 관련 주제로 45개 발표를 했습니다

저는 2006년 7월부터 2007년 2월까지 경희대학교에서 한국어연수를 마친 후 2007년 3월부터 2010년 1월까지 고려대학교에서 국어국문학과(한국어문화교육 전공) 석사과정을 마쳤습니다.

3. How did the GKS scholarship help you with your academic goals? What resources or opportunities did you take advantage of during your time in Korea

Before coming to Korea, I completed my Bachelor's degree in Political Science at the University of Delhi and studied Korean as a minor for two years. While pursuing my Master's in Political Science, I worked as a part-time instructor teaching beginner-level Korean. This experience deepened my interest in Korean language education and led me to pursue it professionally.
Receiving the GKS scholarship in 2006 became a turning point in my academic journey, allowing me to shift my field to Korean language education. The scholarship not only provided financial support but also offered a well-structured academic environment and diverse learning opportunities. Through my graduate studies, I gained both theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills in language education.
Although I initially faced challenges due to differences in academic fields and cultural environments, continuous support from professors and peers at Korea University helped me overcome these difficulties. This experience contributed not only to my academic growth but also to my personal development.
Beyond academics, I actively participated in various extracurricular activities. Through interactions with Korean friends, I naturally improved my language skills and gained a deeper understanding of Korean culture by attending birthdays, weddings, and traditional holidays such as Seollal and Chuseok.
I also participated in programs such as the Cross-Cultural Awareness Programme in Myeongdong for about two years and volunteered at elementary and middle schools in Seoul, introducing Indian culture. In 2008, I joined the CJ Global Network Programme, where I learned about Korean business culture and etiquette.
Additionally, I received awards in writing contests hosted by the Seoul Global Center (2008) and the King Sejong Memorial Society (2006). I also had opportunities to appear on Korean media, including KBS and National Assembly Broadcasting, where I introduced Indian culture and politics.
Overall, the GKS scholarship provided not only academic support but also invaluable opportunities for cultural exchange and global perspective development.

3. GKS 장학금이 학업 목표 달성에 어떤 도움을 주었나요? 한국에서 어떤 자원이나 기회를 활용 하셨나요?
저는 인도 델리대학교에서 정치학을 전공으로 학사 과정을 마친 후, 같은 대학교에서 2년 동안 부전공으로 한국어를 공부했습니다. 이후 정치학 석사 과정을 진행하는 동시에 델리대학교에서 시간강사로 근무하며 학생들에게 초급 한국어를 가르치기 시작했습니다. 이 경험을 통해 한국어 교육에 대한 관심이 더욱 깊어졌고, 한국어와 한국 문화에 대한 애정을 바탕으로 보다 전문적으로 공부하고자 결심하게 되었습니다. 그 결과, 2006년 정부초청장학금(GKS)을 받게 되었고 전공을 한국어 교육으로 전환하게 되었습니다.
GKS 장학금은 저의 학업 목표를 실현하는 데 있어 매우 중요한 전환점이 되었습니다. 경제적인 지원뿐만 아니라, 한국에서 체계적으로 학문을 연구할 수 있는 환경과 다양한 학습 기회를 제공해 주었습니다. 저는 한국에 와서 한국어교육 석사 과정을 전공하며 언어 교육 이론과 실제 교수법에 대한 전문적인 지식과 역량을 갖출 수 있었습니다.
처음 한국에서 유학 생활을 시작했을 때는 전공과 문화의 차이로 인해 어려움을 겪기도 했습니다.
그러나 고려대학교의 교수님들과 동료들과의 지속적인 소통과 도움을 통해 이러한 어려움을 극복 할 수 있었고, 그 과정에서 학문적 성장 뿐만 아니라 인간적인 성숙도 함께 이룰 수 있었습니다.
그 결과, 석사 과정을 성공적으로 마칠 수 있었습니다.
또한 저는 학업 외적으로도 다양한 활동에 적극적으로 참여하며 폭넓은 경험을 쌓았습니다. 한국인 친구들과의 교류를 통해 일상생활 속에서 자연스럽게 한국어를 사용하며 실질적인 언어 능력을 향상시켰습니다. 특히 친구들의 생일잔치, 결혼식, 설날과 추석 같은 전통 명절에 참여하고 그들의 가정을 방문하면서 교과서에서는 배울 수 없는 한국 문화의 생생한 모습을 깊이 이해할 수 있었습니다.
이와 더불어 다양한 프로그램에도 적극적으로 참여하였습니다. 약 2년 동안 명동에서 진행된 'Cross-Cultural Awareness Programme'에 참여하여 다문화 이해 활동을 수행하였고, 주말에는 서울의 초·중학교를 방문하여 인도 문화를 소개하는 봉사활동을 진행했습니다. 이를 통해 교육자로서의 경험을 확장함과 동시에 한국 사회와의 교류를 더욱 넓힐 수 있었습니다.
또한 2008년에는 CJ에서 주관한 'CJ Global Network Programme'에 참가하여 한국의 비즈니스 문화와 예절을 배울 수 있는 소중한 기회를 가졌습니다. 이외에도 서울글로벌센터(2008년)와 세종대왕기념사업회(2006년)에서 주최한 글쓰기 대회에 참여하여 수상하는 성과를 이루었고, 이를 통해 다양한 국적의 친구들과 교류할 수 있었습니다. 나아가 이러한 활동을 바탕으로 KBS와 국회방송 등 방송 프로그램에 출연하여 인도의 문화와 정치에 대해 소개하는 경험도 할 수 있어서 한국의 엔터테인먼트 산업은 세계적으로 큰 영향을 미치고 있다는 것을 배우게 되었습니다.
이처럼 GKS 장학금은 저에게 단순한 학업 지원을 넘어, 학문적 성장과 더불어 문화적 이해와 국제적 시야를 넓힐 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공해 주었습니다. 앞으로도 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 한국어 교육 분야에서 전문성을 더욱 발전시키고, 한국과 인도를 잇는 가교 역할을 수행하고자 합니다.

4. Have you been able to use the skills or knowledge you gained in Korea in your career so far?

Yes, absolutely. My study experience in Korea has had a significant impact on both my career development and confidence. Currently, I teach Korean at the University of Delhi, where I apply various teaching methods and cultural insights gained in Korea. In particular, I utilize learner-centered approaches and communicative teaching methods to enhance students' learning outcomes. I have also maintained academic collaborations with professors from Korea and have organized seminars, academic events, and Korean speech contests at the University of Delhi.
Furthermore, I played a coordinating role in academic exchanges and MoU agreements between Korean universities and the University of Delhi in 2024 and 2025. When the University of Delhi launched its Master's program in Korean Studies in 2024, my academic experience in Korea was instrumental in designing the curriculum and course syllabi.
In 2018, I also had the opportunity to work as a translator and interpreter for the media team during the visit of former Korean President Moon Jae-in to Delhi.
These experiences demonstrate how my knowledge and skills gained in Korea have contributed to my professional expertise and international academic collaboration.

4. 한국에서 배운 기술이나 지식을 현재 커리어에 활용하고 있나요?
한국에서의 유학 경험은 제 경력 발전과 자신감 향상에 매우 중요한 영향을 미쳤습니다.
현재 저는 델리대학교에서 한국어를 가르치고 있으며, 한국에서 습득한 다양한 교수법과 문화적 이해를 수업에 적극적으로 활용하고 있습니다. 특히 한국에서 배운 학습자 중심의 교육 방식과 실제 의사소통 능력을 강화하는 교수법을 적용하여 학생들의 학습 효과를 높이고 있습니다.
또한, 한국에서 맺은 교수님들과의 인연을 바탕으로 학문적 교류를 지속하고 있습니다. 이러한 네트워크를 활용하여 델리대학교에서 한국어 교육 세미나와 학술 행사를, 한국어 말하기 대회 등 기획 및 개최하였으며, 2024년과 2025년에 한국 대학과 델리대학교 간의 학술 교류 및 MOU 체결 과정에서도 코디네이터로 참여하는 등 중요한 역할을 수행했습니다.
델리대학교는 2024년에 "한국어" 석사과정을 시작했을 때 한국에서 얻은 지식으로 석사 과목을 설정과 각과목의 강의 계획서 준비하는데 도움이 되었습니다.
그리고 2018년에 한국 대통령이신 '문재인'이 델리에 방문했을 때 3일 같이 만난 기회가 있었고 미디어팀에 번역통역 활동을 했습니다.
이처럼 한국에서 얻은 지식과 경험은 단순한 학업 성취를 넘어, 제 전문성을 강화하고 국제적인 교육 및 연구 협력에 기여하는 데 큰 밑거름이 되었습니다

5. What role has the GKS alumni network played in your life after graduation?

The GKS alumni network has continued to play a meaningful role in my life. I regularly connect with fellow alumni in India, sharing experiences, information, and participating in joint projects.
A particularly memorable experience was participating in the 2025 GKS Alumni Invitation Program in Korea, where I spent a week exploring recent developments in Korean education and culture. During this visit, I also reconnected with my academic advisor at Korea University and discussed potential academic collaborations, including MoU agreements between Delhi University and Kyungpook National University.
The alumni network has provided valuable opportunities for continuous growth, collaboration, and global networking.

5. 졸업 이후 GKS 동문 네트워크는 당신의 삶에 어떤 역할을 했나요?
졸업 후에도 GKS 동문 네트워크는 제 삶에 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다. 저는 인도 내 GKS 동들과 정기적으로 교류하며 서로의 경험과 정보를 공유하고, 다양한 공동 프로젝트에 참여하고 있습니다.
또한 한국 관련 발표와 워크숍에도 함께 참여하면서 학문적·문화적 교류를 지속적으로 이어가고 있습니다.
특히 인도 GKS 동문회의 안내로 2025년 10월에 진행된 GKS 동문 한국 방문 프로그램에 참여하여 1주일 동안 한국을 방문한 경험은 매우 뜻깊었습니다. 이 프로그램을 통해 한국의 최신 교육 및 문화 동향을 직접 체험할 수 있었을 뿐만 아니라, 고려대학교 지도 교수님과 동료들도 만났으며 델리대학교와 경북대 간에 학술적 교류 양해각서 체결에 대해서도 회의했고 다양한 국가의 동문들과 교류하며 글로벌 네트워크를 더욱 확장할 수 있었습니다.
이처럼 GKS 동문 네트워크는 졸업 이후에도 지속적인 성장과 협력의 기회를 제공해 주는 소중한 자산이라고 생각합니다.

7. Do you think the GKS program has evolved over the years? How could it improve?

I would strongly encourage them to apply without hesitation. Korea offers a safe, clean, and welcoming environment, and its universities are globally recognized. The opportunity to interact with students from diverse backgrounds helps broaden one's global perspective.
Although cultural and language differences may pose initial challenges, preparing in advance and maintaining an open and proactive mindset will greatly ease the transition.
Studying in Korea through GKS can become a life-changing experience.
7. GKS 지원을 고민하는 사람들에게 해주고 싶은 말이 있다면?
GKS 프로그램 지원을 고민하고 있는 분들에게는 망설이기보다 도전해 보라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다.
한국은 안전하고 깨끗한 나라일 뿐만 아니라, 한국인들은 전반적으로 친절하고 성실하여 유학생들이 생활하기에 매우 좋은 환경을 갖추고 있습니다.
또한 한국의 대학들은 세계적으로 인정받고 있으며, 다양한 국가에서 온 학생들과 교류할 수 있는 기회가 많아 국제적인 시각을 넓히는 데 큰 도움이 됩니다. 이러한 경험은 학문적 성장 뿐만 아니라 개인적인 발전에도 매우 긍정적인 영향을 미칩니다.
물론 처음에는 문화와 언어의 차이로 인해 어려움이나 오해를 겪을 수 있습니다. 하지만 한국에 오기 전에 기본적인 한국어와 문화를 미리 공부한다면 훨씬 빠르게 적응할 수 있습니다. 중요한 것은 열린 마음과 적극적인 자세라고 생각합니다.
한국에서의 유학 경험은 단순한 학업을 넘어 인생의 소중한 전환점이 될 수 있습니다. 따라서 조금의 두려움이 있더라도 용기를 내어 도전해 보시기를 진심으로 권해 드립니다.

8. How did you prepare for life in Korea? Any challenges or cultural shocks?

Before arriving in Korea, I prepared carefully for my new environment. As a vegetarian, I brought some Indian food and researched places like Itaewon where Indian ingredients were available. I also prepared about $500 for initial living expenses and brought Hindi grammar books for comparative research.
Despite this preparation, I faced several challenges, including differences in weather, transportation, and the education system. I often made small mistakes, such as taking the wrong bus or subway. Changing my major to Korean language education also required me to overcome academic difficulties due to my limited background in linguistics.
Language barriers and cultural differences sometimes caused misunderstandings, and the stress even affected my health, requiring treatment at Seoul National University Hospital. However, over time, I adapted by actively communicating with Korean friends and receiving support from those around me. As a result, my language skills and cultural understanding improved significantly, and in 2008, I was recognized as an "Excellent Student" by NIIED.
8. 한국에 오기 전 어떤 준비를 했나요? 문화적 충격이나 어려움은 있었나요
한국에 도착하기 전, 저는 새로운 환경에 잘 적응하기 위해 여러 가지 준비를 했습니다.
특히, 채식주의자였기 때문에 한국에서의 식생활을 고려하여 인도 식품을 일부 준비해 갔습니다. 또한 서울 이태원 에서는 다양한 인도 식재료를 구할 수 있다는 정보를 미리 알면 초기 정착에 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 초기 생활을 대비해 약 500달러 정도의 생활비도 준비했으며, 학문적인 준비로는 한국어와 힌디어를 비교 연구하고자 힌디어 문법 관련 서적을 함께 가져갔습니다. 이러한 준비는 유학 초기의 적응 과정에서 실질적인 도움이 되었습니다.
하지만 한국에 처음 도착했을 때는 여러 가지 문화적 차이로 인해 어려움을 겪기도 했습니다. 날씨, 교통수단, 교육 제도 등에서 인도와 많은 차이가 있었고, 지하철이나 버스를 잘못 타는 등의 작은 실수도 자주 있었습니다. 또한 전공을 한국어 교육으로 변경하면서 언어학적 배경지식이 부족해 학업적으로도 부담을 느꼈습니다. 특히 음식 문화와 의사소통 방식의 차이가 크게 느껴졌고, 당시 한국어가 아직 능숙하지 않았기 때문에 대화 과정에서 오해가 생기기도 했습니다. 이러한 스트레스로 인해 건강이 악화되어 대학로에 있는 서울대학교병원에서 치료를 받은 경험도 있습니다.
그러나 시간이 지나면서 점차 한국 생활에 적응할 수 있었습니다. 한국인 친구들과 적극적으로 대화하려고 노력했고, 주변 사람들의 친절한 도움 덕분에 한국어 실력과 문화 이해도가 크게 향상되었습니다. 이러한 노력의 결과로, 2008년에는 국립국제교육원에서 '우수한 학생'으로 선정되는 성과도 이루었습니다.
이 경험을 통해 저는 사전 준비의 중요성 뿐만 아니라, 새로운 문화를 열린 마음으로 받아들이는 태도가 얼마나 중요한지를 깊이 깨닫게 되었습니다. 이러한 배움은 이후의 학업과 삶에도 큰 자산이 되었습니다.

9. What advice would you give to future GKS applicants?

When I applied in 2006, access to information was limited. Today, applicants have abundant resources online. I strongly advise carefully reviewing application guidelines and preparing documents thoroughly, especially the personal statement and study plan. These should clearly reflect your experiences, motivations, and future goals. Consulting current GKS scholars or professors can also provide valuable insights.
Additionally, consistently learning Korean language and culture before arrival will greatly help with adaptation. Most importantly, maintain an open mind and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
9. 앞으로 GKS 지원자들에게 해주고 싶은 조언은 무엇인가요?
제가 2006년에 GKS를 지원했을 당시에는 스마트폰이 없어서 정보에 접근하는 것이 쉽지 않았고 관련 자료를 찾는 데에도 많은 어려움이 있었습니다. 그러나 요즘은 인터넷과 다양한 온라인 자료가 잘 갖춰져 있기 때문에, 지원자들은 훨씬 더 많은 정보를 쉽게 얻을 수 있습니다.
미래의 GKS 지원자들에게 가장 먼저 드리고 싶은 조언은, 지원 요강을 꼼꼼히 읽고 서류를 철저하게 준비하는 것입니다. 특히 자기소개서와 학업계획서는 단순한 형식적인 글이 아니라, 자신의 경험과 목표를 구체적으로 잘 연결하여 진정성 있게 작성하는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 자신이 왜 해당 전공을 선택했는지, 그리고 앞으로 어떤 목표를 가지고 있는지를 명확하게 보여주어야 합니다.
또한 전공이나 대학 선택에 대해 고민이 있을 경우, 이미 한국에서 공부하고 있는 GKS 장학생이나 교수님과 상담해 보는 것도 큰 도움이 됩니다. 실제 경험을 바탕으로 한 조언은 매우 현실적이고 유익합니다.
아울러 한국에 오기 전부터 한국어와 한국 문화에 대해 꾸준히 배우는 자세도 중요합니다. 매일 조금이라도 한국어를 접하고 한국 사회에 대한 이해를 넓혀 간다면, 한국에 도착한 이후 훨씬 빠르게 적응할 수 있습니다.
무엇보다도 열린 마음과 도전하는 자세를 가지는 것이 중요합니다. 새로운 환경에서 다양한 어려움을 마주할 수 있지만, 이를 성장의 기회로 받아들인다면 더욱 의미 있는 유학 생활을 할 수 있을 것입니다.
