1.GKS (한국 정부 장학생)로서의 경험과 이 장학 프로그램으로부터 배운 점을 공유해 주세요.

저는 2010년 겨울 방학 때 한국에서 짧은 인턴 십을 마치고 독일에 돌아갔습니다. 학사논문을 한참 쓰는 중이었어요. 독일에서 학사과정을 마치고 한국학과 석사과정을 밟고 싶었으나 한국에서 하기에는 너무 비쌌습니다. 다행히도 독일 “본대학교”에서 수업을 하시던 한국 출신 교수님께서 저를 불러서 한국정부장학생프로그램에 대해서 알려주셨어요 (지금도 늘 감사하게 생각하고 있어요).

문제 서류 접수 마감일까지 2주 밖에 안 남았었어요. 부랴부랴 필요한 서류들을 최대한 빨리 요청하고 모아놓았는데 필요한 서류 중에 한국어능력시험 (TOPIK)이나 TOEFL 증명서가 있었어요. 한국어능력시험은 그 당시에 독일에서 자주 열리지 않았고 TOEFL시험도 날짜 딱 하나만 남아 있었어요. 다행이 신청이 돼서 기차를 타고 1박2일 일정으로 독일 슈투트가르트로 가서 시험을 보고 왔어요.

모든 자료들을 여기 저기 돌아다니면서 마련하고 운 좋게도 결국 뽑혔어요.

과정 자체가 정말 너무나 훌륭하고 감사한 장학프로그램이었죠. 어학당 수업과 석사과정을 위한 등록금, 항공권, 보험과 생활비까지. 이 프로그램이 없었더라면 돈이 없는 바람에 한국에서 석사과정을 밟지 못했을 거예요.


1. Please share your experience as a GKS scholar and what you have learned from this scholarship program.

I returned to Germany during the winter break of 2010 after a short internship in Korea. I was in the middle of writing my bachelor's thesis. After completing my bachelor's degree in Germany, I wanted to pursue a master's degree in Korean studies, but it was too expensive to do so in Korea. Fortunately, a Korean professor who was teaching at the University of Bonn in Germany called me and told me about the Global Korea Scholarship Program (for which I am still grateful).

There were only two weeks left until the deadline for submitting the documents. I gathered the necessary documents as quickly as possible, and among the required documents were the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) and TOEFL certificates. The Test of Proficiency in Korean was not held often in Germany at that time, and there was only one date left for the TOEFL test. Luckily, I was able to book the test, so I took the train to Stuttgart, Germany for a two-day, one-night trip and took the test. In the end, I gathered all the materials and luckily, I was selected.

The course itself was truly an excellent scholarship program for which I am grateful. Tuition, airline tickets, insurance and living expenses for language school classes and master's programs. Without this program, I would not have been able to pursue a master's degree in Korea.



2. 졸업 후의 경험/이야기를 말씀해주십시오.

저는 졸업 후에 바로 잘 풀리지 않았어요. (아마도 인문학 전공 때문인 것 같습니다.) 취직할 때까지 오래 걸렸어요. 국제기구에서 취직하는 게 경쟁 때문에 쉽지는 않았고 한국인들도 취업하기가 힘든 상황에서 한국학 전공을 한 외국인을 뽑는 것은 한국 기업이나 기관들 입장에서는 그다지 도움이 되지 않았어요. 그러나 석사과정을 밟은 게 후회가 되지 않았고 나중에 방송활동을 하면서 정말 많은 도움이 되었습니다. 지금도 제가 진행하는 인문학 프로그램이나 강연, 방송 중 토론에서 석사 때 배웠던 내용들을 자주 언급합니다.


2. Please share your experience/story after graduation.

Things didn't go well for me right after graduation. It took me a long time to get a job (probably because of my humanities major). It was not easy to get a job at an international organization in a situation where it was difficult even for Koreans to get a job, recruiting foreigners who majored in Korean studies was not very helpful to Korean companies or institutions. However, I did not regret taking the master's program, and it really helped me a lot later in my broadcasting career. Even now, I often mention the facts I learned during my master's degree in humanities in my programs, lectures, and discussions during broadcasts.



3. 장래계획과 GKS 동문에 대한 의견/생각을 자세하게 설명해 주십시오.

장학프로그램이 있기에 형편이 어려운 학생들도 훌륭한 인재가 될 수 있는 너무나 중요한 프로그램이며 양국 교류에도 상당히 많은 도움이 된다고 생각합니다. 얼마 전부터 독일에 유학을 가는 한국인 학생보다 한국에 들어오는 독일 유학생들이 더 많다는 통계가 공개되면서 대한민국이 많은 이들에게 공부할 이유를 주는 나라인 것을 알 수 있어요.


3. Please explain in detail your future plan and comments/thoughts for GKS Alumni.

I think that the Global Korea Scholarship program is a very important program that allows even students from disadvantaged backgrounds to have an opportunity to study, and it is very helpful to have a positive relationship between countries. Recently, statistics were released showing that there are more German students coming to Korea than Korean students studying abroad in Germany, showing that Korea is a country that gives many people an opportunity to study.



4. 3월에 새 학기를 시작하는 동문들에게 한마디를 전해 주신다면

한국은 교육비가 많이 드는 나라이지만 GKS 장학프로그램을 통해 많은 훌륭한 인재들이 와서 자기 꿈을 펼칠 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다!

Korea is a country where education costs a lot, but I hope that many talented people can come and pursue their dreams through the GKS scholarship program!
