1.GKS (한국 정부 장학생)으로서의 경험과 이 장학 프로그램으로부터 배운 점을 공유해 주세요.

GKS 장학 프로그램은 제 인생에서 일어난 가장 크고 자랑스러운 변화입니다.
이 장학금은 저를 밝은 미래로 이끌어주었고 오늘날의 모습으로 만들어주었습니다. 또한 더 큰 꿈, 더 어려운 도전, 그리고 더 큰 기회로 이어지는 문으로 안내했습니다. 저는 2008년 6월 26일 한국에 도착했던 날을 여전히 선명하게 기억합니다. 가족과 친구들을 뒤로 하고 떠나는 것에 있어서 설렘도 있었지만 두려움이 컸기 때문입니다. 그러나 첫날부터 GKS 커뮤니티는 저를 환영해주었습니다.
GKS 프로그램은 가치 있는 학습 기회뿐만 아니라 아름다운 한국 문화를 소개해 주었습니다. 처음에는 파키스탄과 한국의 음식 문화의 차이로 인해 걱정되었지만, 이제 한국 음식을 아주 좋아합니다. 많은 전통적인 한국 요리가 고기를 빼면 할랄 식품이기 때문에 더 좋습니다. 한국 문화에 대한 흥미가 증가함에 따라 한국 음식에 가까워졌고 또한 새로운 것을 시도하고자 하는 열린 마음으로 한국 음식에 도전했습니다. 상상해 보세요. 만약 제가 시도하지 않았고 자신을 뛰어넘는 도전을 하지 않았다면 저는 풍부한 한국 음식 문화를 사랑하지 않았을지도 모르고 두 번째 고향을 얻지 못했을 것입니다. 이것이 제가 모든 젊은 GKS 학생들에게 하는 조언입니다. 자신에게 도전하고 새로운 것을 시도하고 개방하세요. 그러면 인생에서 새로운 경험을 찾을 수 있을 겁니다


1. Please share your experience as a GKS scholar and what you have learned from this scholarship program.

GKS Scholarship program is by far the best and the proudest thing happened in my life. It changed my life in a very positive way and whatever I am today is all because of this prestigious scholarship. It opened the door for me to live bigger dreams, harder challenges and better opportunities. It made me live the Korean Dream.
I still remember my first day; June 26, 2008 when I landed in Korea. I was excited but at the same time very scared particularly because of leaving family and friends behind. But from day 1, GKS gave me a new family of teachers and friends from diverse backgrounds at the amazing Sun Moon University (Korean Language Institute) who own a special place in my heart today even after 16 years.
I got closed to Korean Food because of my increasing interest in Korea Culture and also because of my own open-mindedness for trying new things and challenging myself. Imagine, if I wouldn’t have tried and wouldn’t have challenged myself, I might have not fell in love with the rich Korean Food Culture and I might have not got a second home. And this is my advice to all young GKS students, please challenge yourself, try new things and be open, you will find new wanders in life.



2. 졸업 후의 경험/이야기를 말씀해주십시오.

GKS 덕분에 한국어를 배우고 한국 문화를 더 잘 이해하게 되었으며, 언어 과정과 대학에서 받은 훈련으로 파키스탄에서 재생 에너지 프로젝트를 개발하는 중소 규모의 한국 기업으로 취업을 결정 할 수 있었습니다. 저의 첫 번째 고향(파키스탄)과 두 번째 고향(한국) 사이의 중요한 다리를 만드는 역할이 매우 흥미롭게 다가왔습니다. 제 목표는 파키스탄의 에너지 문제를 해결하고 한국 기술에 새로운 시장을 개척하는 데 기여하는 것이었습니다. 회사에서 300MW 태양광 발전 프로젝트(당시 프로젝트 비용: 6억 달러)를 개발 매니저로 5년간 일한 후, 저는 한국이 단일 문화에서 다문화로 발전하는 과정의 일부가 되고 싶었습니다.
저는 미디어 분야에서 기회를 찾았으며 파키스탄을 처음으로 소개하는 토론 프로그램 "Bring It On" 아리랑 TV에 출연했습니다. 그 후에는 JTBC의 인기 토크쇼 "비정상회담"에서 파키스탄 대표로 출연했습니다. 저의 목표는 파키스탄인과 한국인 사이의 상호 이해를 증진시켜 양국이 경제적 동맹이 될 수 있도록 하는 것이었습니다. 그 결과, 2억 5천만 명의 인구를 가진 파키스탄이 한국에게 새로운 시장이 되었습니다.
2018 평창 동계 올림픽 명예 홍보대사, 한국 관광공사의 명예 홍보대사로 활동하면서 주로 한국에서 할랄 관광의 발전에 기여했습니다. 그리고 서울 이민국의 명예 홍보대사, 용산구청의 외국인 명예 대표로 활동, 한글의 명예 홍보대사로 활동하였습니다.
현재는 전문적인 직업과 두 개의 사업을 하면서 자랑스럽게도 GKS Alumni 코리아의 회장으로 활동하고 있습니다. 또한, 서울 관광협회의 자문위원, 한국 법무부의 자문위원, GKS 프로그램의 발전을 위해 NIIED의 자문위원으로 활동하고 있으며 한국 이민 및 통합 프로그램(KIIP)의 멘토로 활동하고 있습니다. 저는 2018년 서울 명예 시민권, 2020년 서울 관광상 및 2021년 파키스탄 자랑상을 받게 된 것에 영광을 느낍니다


2. Please share your experience/story after graduation.

Thanks to GKS, having learnt Korean and having a better understanding of Korean culture as well as the kind of trainings I got during language course and during university, I easily landed two jobs right before my graduation. Another job was in a small medium Korean company which was developing some Renewable Energy Projects in Pakistan. Keeping in mind the purpose of GKS which is to make us important bridges between our first home (Pakistan in my case) and our second home (Korea for all GKS scholars), I rather took this job. My aim was to contribute in solving the energy problem of Pakistan and also contribute in building a new market for Korean Technology. We developed a 300 MW Solar Power Project (Project Cost: 600 million USDs back then) and I was the Project Manager. After working with the company for five years, I found a new direction for myself and that was to be a part of the transition process of Korea from a homogenous country into a multi-cultured country. For that reason, I started looking for opportunities in Media and got into a Debate Show “Bring It On” on Arirang TV where I introduced Pakistan to Korean people for the first time. Then I joined another popular Talk Show “Abnormal Summit” on JTBC as the representative of Pakistan. I was on that show for two years.
Through those TV shows, my aim was to build a better understanding between Pakistanis and Koreas ultimately making both countries good economic allies so that Pakistan being a huge population of 250 million people could become a new market for Korea where because of the population shrinking, the local market was contracting seriously. I also worked as an honorary ambassador of Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics 2018, an honorary Ambassador of Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) contributing mainly in the development of Halal Tourism in Korea, an honorary Ambassador of Ministry of Justice, Seoul Immigration Office, as an honorary representative of foreigners at Yongsan-gu Office as well as an honorary Ambassador of Hangeul.
Currently, along with my professional job and my two businesses, I am proudly working as the President of GKS Alumni Korea. Also, I am working as an advisor to Seoul Tourism Association, an advisor to Ministry of Justice Korea, an advisor to NIIED for the development of the prestigious GKS Program as well as a mentor of Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP). I am honored to have received the Seoul Honorary Citizenship 2018, the Seoul Tourism Award 2020 and the Pride of Pakistan Award 2021.



3. 장래계획과 GKS 동문에 대한 의견/생각을 자세하게 설명해 주십시오.

GKS Alumni 협회는 한국의 가장 잠재력 있는 미래 브랜드 중 하나입니다. 미래에는 GKS Alumni 들이 세계의 기업과 정부를 이끌어 한국의 강력한 소프트 네트워크를 해외에서 구축할 것입니다. GKS Alumni 협회는 또한 외교, 기술, 다양성 등에서 세계를 더 나은 곳으로 만드는 기여자가 될 것입니다.
저의 미래 계획은 GKS Alumni 및 GKS Alumni 코리아의 회장으로서 최선을 다해 강력한 GKS Alumni 코리아와 전 세계적인 GKS Alumni 네트워크를 구축하는 데 기여하는 것입니다. 또한, 한국에서의 외국인과 국제 학생들이 직면한 문제를 강조하여 GKS 프로그램의 발전에 기여할 계획입니다. GKS Alumni는 경제적으로 취약한 가정 출신의 재능 있는 한국 학생들을 위한 GKS 기금을 구축하기로 계획하고 있습니다. 이러한 목표를 달성하기 위해서는 NIIED 및 한국 및 해외의 모든 GKS Alumni 로부터 지속적인 지원이 필요합니다.


3. Please explain in detail your future plan and comments/thoughts for GKS Alumni.

GKS Alumni Association is one of the most potential future brands of Korea. In the future, GKS Alumni will be leading in companies and governments around the world building the strongest soft network of Korea abroad. GKS Alumni Association will also be a big contributor globally in making this world a better place in terms of diplomacy, technology, diversity, and much more which makes me very excited about it. My future plan as a GKS Alumni and President of GKS Alumni Korea is to keep trying my best to help contribute in building a strong GKS Alumni Korea and a strong GKS Alumni Global. I also plan to keep contributing in the development of the GKS Program by highlighting problems being faced by foreigners and international students in Korea in general and GKS Alumni and GKS Students in particular. The GKS Alumni is planning to build a GKS Fund for talented Korean students in High Schools who belong to economically weaker families. To achieve these goals, continuous support is needed from NIIED as well as all GKS Alumni in Korea and beyond.



4. 3월에 새 학기를 시작하는 동문들에게 한마디를 전해 주신다면

신입 GKS 학생 여러분께 인사를 전합니다. 한국에 오신 여러분 모두를 환영합니다. 여러분은 각자의 나라에서 치열한 경쟁을 통해 한국의 GKS 가족이 되기 위한 자격을 얻었을 것입니다. 이를 축하합니다. 이제부터 여러분은 놀라운 새로운 경험을 쌓게 되고 그와 더불어 큰 도전에 직면할 것입니다. 하지만 GKS 학생들은 어떤 도전이라도 마주할 수 있고 그것을 기회로 바꿀 수 있을 것입니다. 포기하지 마세요. 한국에서 여러분의 꿈을 실현하세요. 열심히 공부하고 친구들을 만들며 아름다운 추억을 쌓으세요. 가장 중요한 것은 한국어 공부와 문화에 진지하게 접근하는 것입니다. 그렇게 한다면 밝은 미래가 여러분을 기다리고 있을 것입니다. 여러분은 첫 번째 집(당신의 나라)과 두 번째 집(한국) 사이의 중요한 인물이 될 것입니다. 한국은 여러분을 필요로 합니다. 모든 GKS Alumni와 저는 여러분이 성공적으로 학업을 마치고 GKS Alumni의 일원이 되기를 기다리고 있습니다. 모두 파이팅!


4. Please say hello to scholars who start their first semester in Korea in March

A humble HELLO to all new GKS Students. I welcome all of you in Korea and wish you all the best. I am sure you guys have qualified through intense competitions in your countries to become a part of GKS Family in Korea for which I congratulate you. Now on, you are going to make amazing new experiences as well as face huge challenges. I am sure GKS Students can face any challenge and turn it into opportunities. Please do not give up, live the Korean Dream to its full, study hard, make great friends and make beautiful memories. Most important, please work hard with Korean language, and learn the culture to its depths, if you do, a bright future will be waiting for you ahead. You are going to be key people in Korean society and between your first home (your country) and your second home (Korea). Korean needs you, so get ready. All GKS Alumni and I will be waiting for you to successfully finish your studies and become a part of our GKS Alumni soon.
