1. GKS(한국 정부 장학생)로서의 경험과 이 프로그램을 통해 배운 것에 대해 말씀해 주십시오.

저는 2015년 KGSP 석사 장학생이었습니다. KGSP는 한국 내 외국인 유학생을 위한 최고의 장학 프로그램으로, 이 프로그램을 통해 왕복 항공권 (대한항공/아시아나항공 이코노미석), 이사, 학비, 생활비, 논문 인쇄비 등을 모두 제공받았습니다. 특히, 매달 제공되는 생활비는 많은 도움이 되었습니다. 물론 이 돈으로 저축까지 하는 것은 어렵지만, 학교생활에 충실히 지낸다면 경제적인 어려움은 잘 못 느낄 것입니다. 장학 프로그램에는 한국어 수업 1년 과정과 석사과정 2년 과정이 포함되며, 첫해 TOPIK 3급(최고 6 급) 취득이 요구됩니다. 한국어를 배우면 한국생활에 큰 도움이 되는데, 영어구사자인 제게 한국어 공부는 꽤 어려웠습니다.

한국어는 문법 구조도 영어와 매우 다르고, 배워야 할 단어가 많았기에 한국어를 편하게 구사하기 위해서는 많은 연습이 필요했습니다. 하지만 다른 장학생들과 함께 한국어를 배운 1년은 정말 재미있는 시간이었습니다. 특히 여러 나라 사람들을 만나 평생의 친구가 되었다는 것에 진심으로 감사한 마음입니다. 2015년 KGSP 프로그램에서는 몇 개의 그룹으로 나눠진 장학생들이 2~3개의 어학원에 배정되어 어학연수를 하였는데, 이 기간 동안 대부분의 학생이 기숙사에서 두 명씩 룸메이트를 이뤄 생활하였습니다. 운이 좋게도, 제가 배정된 어학원이 속한 대학의 기숙사 건물은 꽤 새 건물이었고, KGSP 학생들에게 임대료 할인을 제공해 생활비를 절약할 수 있었습니다.

한국에 처음 도착하던 날, 공항에서 대기하고 있던 리무진 버스를 타고 기숙사로 이동했습니다. KGSP 선생님들께서는 우리가 만난 한국인들 중 가장 이해심과 인내심이 많으며, 서툰 저희의 말을 잘 이해하셔서 편히 대화할 수 있는 분들이셨습니다.

하지만 초급(레벨1) 수업이 영어로 진행될 거라고는 기대하지는 마세요. 모든 한국 어 수업은 손짓과 몸짓을 동반한 순수 한국어로만 진행됩니다. 시험에 합격한 후, 친구들과 앞으로 다시는 이렇게 열심히 공부하고 싶지는 않다고 생각할 정도였죠. 어학연수를 마친 후에는 대학교 기숙사 규정에 따라 퇴소해야 했기 때문에 지낼 곳 을 따로 찾아야만 했습니다.

대학원 생활은 전공, 대학, 학과, 특히 지도교수에 따라 달라집니다. 특히, 대학원에 서는 교수님이 누구인지 미리 확인해보는 것이 매우 중요합니다. 전공이 기술 분야 라면 대학 실험실에서 근무해야 하는지도 확인해봐야 하며, 교수님이 좋은 분인지 도 확인하시기 바랍니다. 제 경험상으로는 대개 나이가 많은 교수님보다는 젊은 교 수님이 개방적이었지만, 항상 예외는 있는 법입니다. 2~3년을 보내야 할 곳이기에 학생을 보다 존중해주시는 교수님을 찾는 것이 중요합니다. 학위를 처음 받았을 때 에는 교수님에게 적응하기가 어려웠지만 점차 괜찮아졌습니다. 하지만 논문을 작성 하는 것은 정말 어려웠습니다. 몇 번이고 다시 작성해서 교수님 검토를 거쳐 수정 을 받아야 했죠. 정말 많은 노력이 필요했습니다. 한국은 과학 분야에서 정기적으로 연구를 진행하기 때문에 기회가 많습니다. 특히 과학 분야 학생들에게는 좋은 기회 가 될 것입니다. 하지만 결실을 보기 위해서는 반드시 노력이 필요하다는 것을 잊 지 마시기 바랍니다.

인터뷰를 위해 KGSP에 대한 모든 과정을 하나하나 되돌아보는 것이 쉽지는 않았지만 마치 그 때로 되돌아가는 것 같아 감회가 새로웠습니다. 하지만 어떤 부분에서는 힘들었던 기억도 떠올라 눈물이 나기도 했습니다. 미래의 장학생들을 위해 제 경험에 대해 가능한 한 현실적으로 이야기를 정리해봤습니다. 한국에서 대학원을 진학할 때 맞이하게 될 상황에 대해 제 설명이 도움이 되었기를 바랍니다. 상황은 때에 따라 좋을 수도, 나쁠 수도 있겠지만, 가장 중요한 것은 항상 여러분이 하고자 하는 것에 대하여 스스로 충분한 조사를 해야 한다는 것입니다. 결정은 늘 여러분의 몫입니다. 무엇에 도전하든 행운이 있기를 바랍니다.

1. Please share your experience as a GKS scholar and what you have learned from this scholarship program.

I was a KGSP scholar, batch 2015, Master‟s program. KGSP is indeed the best scholarship for international students in Korea. It covers everything, from airline tickets to/from Korea (Korean Air or Asiana, economy seat), moving in, tuition, enough monthly allowance, thesis printing expenses, etc. You won‟t have much problem with regard to money if you spend within your means. However, it is a bit hard to save money as most of the time the monthly allowance is just enough. The scholarship program includes a required 1 year intensive Korean language course, and then 2 years of study for Master‟s. You need to obtain TOPIK level 3 on your first year (the highest level is 6). Learning Korean will help you immensely while living in Korea. Korean language was quite hard to learn especially for an English speaker like me.

The grammar structures were so different from English, not to mention the numerous words I had to learn. It took me lots of practice to eventually feel comfortable in using the language. Whatever, learning Korean for a year with the other scholars was so much fun. I was truly thankful for was that I was able to meet people from different countries who eventually became lifelong friends. For our batch, students were divided equally and enrolled to only a select few university language institutes. During our language training, almost all of us lived in a dorm and we were each other‟s roomies (2 for each room). We were pretty lucky because our language institute‟s university had a fairly new dorm building and that they gave KGSP students some % discount on the rent. When we first arrived, a limousine bus was waiting for us at the airport and he took us directly to the dorm. The Korean teachers we had were some of the most understanding, patient, and easy to talk to Koreans we‟ve met in Korea. However, don‟t expect level 1 class to be taught in English. All Korean classes are taught in pure Korean—with lots of hand and body gestures. After passing the exam, almost all of us felt like we didn‟t want to try so hard anymore. After language school, we needed to look for a place of our own in Busan since we didn‟t really want to stay at the university dorm due to some restrictions. Grad school experience largely depends on your chosen major, your university, your department, and most especially your advisor/professor.

Besides, it is very important that you verify who your professor/s will be in graduate school. If your major is a technical one, verify if you need to work in a university laboratory. Verify if your professor is a good person (or not). To my experience, younger professors are generally more open-minded than older ones, but there are always exceptions. You need to find one who treats his students well if you don‟t want to spend two/three years of grad school hell. At the first time of my degree, I had a hard time to adjust with my professor and then he was quite understandable. But, he was quite difficult at the thesis time. I have to prepare the paper again and again and then he gave me corrections always. So that I have to give so much effort on this. But, for the science background, South Korea has so many opportunities as they do research regularly. So that, it will be a great opportunity for science background students though everyone have to give some effort to have a fruitful life.

Recalling all that was quite exhausting. It was like living it all over again and some parts were just too painful. I was tearing up. However, I wanted to paint a realistic picture of the life I had when I was studying. I hope I was able to show you some of the possible situations you may encounter if ever you decide to pursue your graduate studies in Korea. Clearly, there are two very extreme situations that may come your way. The biggest takeaway is to always do your research. The decision will always be up to you. I wish you luck in all your endeavours.

2. 졸업 후 경험에 대해 말씀해 주십시오.

졸업 후는 어떤 진로를 택하게 될지 알기 힘들고, 종착지 또한 다양하므로 기회에 대해 열린 마음을 가지고 계시길 바랍니다. 저는 한국에서 학위를 취득한 것을 영 광스럽게 생각합니다. 석사 과정을 마친 후 모든 것이 순탄히 진행되었고, 졸업 후 조국으로 돌아와 박사 학위를 준비할 계획이었습니다. 그런데 어느 날, GKS 선생님 께서 학교의 정치외교학과와 경영학과 조교수 자리가 비어 있다며 지원해볼 것을 제안했습니다. 저는 교육자로서 경력을 쌓아보고 싶다는 생각이 들었고, 계획을 바 꾸기로 결심했습니다. 제안받은 자리는 제가 교수직과 연구원으로서 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 좋은 기회였습니다. 다행히 학사 및 석사 학위와 연구 프로필이 우수했던 저는 조교수 자리에 선택받았고, 그 후 대학에 합류하여 성공적으로 1년 간 학생들 을 가르쳤습니다. 처음에는 다양한 국가에서 온 많은 학생들을 보고 긴장했지만 수 업을 몇 번 하고 나니 적응이 되었습니다.

저는 재무 회계과목을 맡아 강의하였습니다. 조교수로서 가장 흥미롭게 진행했던 것은 „스타트업 창업 과정‟이라는 별도 과정을 개설한 것이었습니다. 학과장님의 독 려를 받기도 했던 이 과정은 정말 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 스타트업 창업 과정을 통해 저는 학생들에게 창업에 필요한 요소와 역량에 대해 가르치려고 노력했습니다. 또한 사업 계획을 세우고 이를 적절히 유지하는 방법을 가르쳤으며, 카운셀러로서 의 역할도 마다하지 않았습니다. 그리고 이 과정을 진행하면서 대학의 시설, 학과, 교수진과 관련하여 보완해야할 점을 발견할 수 있었는데, 저는 이런 내용들을 매주 학과장님과 공유하였고, 이를 통해 학과 차원에서 필요한 조치가 취해질 수 있었습 니다. 유학생들의 애로사항을 듣고 문제 해결을 위해 지도한 시간은 정말 흥미롭고 멋진 경험이었습니다. 지금은 일을 할 생각도 있으며, 동시에 제 분야의 박사과정에 진학해보려고도 합니다.

2. Please share your experience/story after graduation.

After graduation, it‟s a wild ride, and you can end up in a lot of places, so keep an open mind to opportunities. It‟s a great honour to have a degree from South Korea. The journey after my masters program was amazing. After completing my graduation, I was planning to come back my motherland and prepare myself for my further higher studies like PhD. Suddenly, the GKS coordinator of my university from where I have completed my masters degree, had informed me that the there was a vacancy for Assistant Professor post in the External Affairs & Business administration department and suggested me to apply there. So that I changed my plan as I want to build up my career in educational background. That was a great opportunity for me to grab some experience in teaching profession and also as a researcher. Because of having excellent academic background in my Bachelor‟sand Masters degree and research profile, they selected me among others. Then I joined there and successfully gained one year teaching experience. At first, I felt nervous in some classes after seeing so many students from different countries but after some classes, I adapted myself.

I taught there courses like Financial accounting. Most exciting part of my teaching career as an assistant professor was opening an independent course named Planning Start-Up Businesses Course. The department head encouraged me about that. It was really marvellous experience for me. On that course, I tried to teach students about the process of a start up business in South Korea and its skills. Besides, I also tried to clarify some business plan and how to maintain them properly. Moreover, I also served them as a student counsellor. In this part, I have noted various problems, deficiency, complements over the university facilities, department, and also the professor. After each week‟s observation, I had to notify the department‟s head about the update. Next the department took the necessary steps on the basis on my information. It was also interesting part for me as I came to know their problems from different countries students and guided them to solve it. It was really wonderful experiences. Now I am open to work and simultaneously looking for PhD position in my arena.



3. 장래 계획과 GKS 동문에 대한 의견/생각을 자세하게 설명해 주십시오.

어떤 목표 건 앞으로 걸음을 내딛기 시작하려면 명확한 계획을 세우는 것이 중요합니다. 또 계획에 따라 일이 진행되지 않을 때를 대비해 유연하고 창의적인 마음도 갖고 있어야 하죠. 많은 사람들이 목표 없이 흘러가는 대로 살아가고있습니다. 꿈을 꾸고, 계획하고, 실행에 옮기는 것은 어떤 도전에서 건 성공을 가져다주는 중요한 요인이죠.

제가 중요하게 생각하는 목표는 제 연구의 결과를 방글라데시에 적용할 수 있도록 하겠다는 것입니다. 연구를 마친 후 고국으로 돌아가 연구 결과를 응용하여 제 박 사 학위를 고국의 안녕을 위해 바치고 싶습니다. 제 꿈은 방글라데시의 명망있는 대학에서 학자로서 학생들에게 제 지식을 나누는 것입니다. KGSP 프로그램을 통한 해외 유학은 더 큰 미래를 열어줬습니다. 마지막으로, 석사 장학 프로그램 개설을 통해 외국 학생들에게 인상깊은 기회를 준 한국 정부에 감사드리며, 한국과 방글라 데시가 우호관계를 유지하길 바랍니다.

저는 긍정적 태도와 결단력, 그리고 의지가 있었기에 꿈을 이룰 수 있었습니다. 앞 으로도 계획을 통해 장기적으로 보람있고 성공적인, 즐거운 삶을 살아갈 것입니다.

3. Please explain in detail your future plan and comments/thoughts for GKS Alumni.

Having a clear plan is crucial to be able to start taking the steps towards any goal. It is also important to keep an open mind that can be flexible and creative when things do not go according to plan. Many people live without having any goals and seem to just exist and let things happen to them. Dreaming, planning and taking action are steps that will help me in achieving success in any endeavour.

The important one is I could apply the result of my study in abroad to Bangladesh. I want to dedicate my doctoral degree for the welfare of my country. After completion of my study I will come back to my home country to apply my leaning outcomes. One of my dreams is to be an academician in any prestigious university in my country that will help to share my expertise to the students. Study abroad will enhance the future chance of getting good job in next level of my career. Moreover, I would like to thankful to Korean Government for my masters program to give this impressive opportunity for the international students like me and always expected to maintain good bilateral relations between Korea and Bangladesh.

I feel that I am well equipped to achieve my dreams because of my positive attitude, determination, and will-power. By following through with these plans I will have a successful, enjoyable life that will be rewarding in the long run.
