Jervian Johnson (Jamaica)

1. Brief Introduction

My name is Jervian Johnson. I am a Chemical and Environmental Engineer from Jamaica. I currently work as a Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Technology, Jamaica.
제 이름은 저비언 존슨(Jervian Johnson)입니다. 저는 자메이카 출신의 화학·환경공학자이며, 현재 자메이카 공과대학교(University of Technology, Jamaica) 화학공학과 교수로 재직하고 있습니다.

I enjoy the flexibility I get and the opportunity to shape Jamaica's future through education and training of our young people, and by participating in cutting-edge research. In addition to teaching, I started a company that manufactures dehydrated tropical fruits. The inspiration for this start-up was my experience in South Korea, where eating those products stimulated feelings of warmth, nostalgia, and happy memories of home.
저는 교육과 연구를 통해 자메이카의 미래 세대를 양성하고, 열대과일 건조 식품 사업을 통해 한국 유학 시절 느꼈던 따뜻함과 향수를 새로운 방식으로 이어가고 있습니다.

2. GKS year, university, major

I became a GKS recipient in 2010. I completed my Korean Language Studies at Kangwon National University, and my Master's of Science degree in Environmental Engineering at Ajou University.
저는 2010년 GKS 장학생으로 선발되었습니다. 강원대학교에서 한국어 연수를 이수했고, 아주대학교에서 환경공학 석사 학위를 취득했습니다.

3. How did the GKS scholarship help you with your academic goals?

GKS allowed me the opportunity to achieve graduate studies in Environmental Engineering at a much younger age than expected. The scholarship provided administrative support, academic resources, and the chance to gain a deep understanding of life and study in Korea. Learning a new language and adapting to a different culture helped me become more confident and more globally minded.
GKS 장학금은 예상보다 이른 시기에 환경공학 분야의 대학원 과정을 밟을 수 있는 기회를 제공했습니다. 학업 지원, 행정 지원, 한국어와 한국 문화 적응 경험은 저에게 국제적인 시야와 자신감을 길러주었습니다.

4. Have you been able to use the skills or knowledge you gained in Korea?

As a professor in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Technology, Jamaica, I apply the mentoring, teaching, research, and professional discipline developed through my Korean study experience. Korea taught me consistency, respect, time management, and the importance of high standards in academic and professional life.
현재 저는 자메이카 공과대학교 교수로서 한국에서 배운 연구 태도, 교육 역량, 성실함, 시간 관리, 높은 기준을 학생 지도와 연구 활동에 활용하고 있습니다.

5. What role has the GKS alumni network played in your life after graduation?

The GKS Alumni Network continues to be a source of inspiration and a meaningful avenue for sharing memories and experiences created in South Korea. Alumni activities, mentoring programs, and international exchanges have helped me stay connected with Korea and with other GKS graduates around the world.

6. Do you think the GKS program has evolved over the years?

I think the GKS program has definitely evolved. It has grown into a stronger global platform that supports students before, during, and after their studies in Korea. More alumni engagement, mentorship, and information sharing can continue to help future scholars adapt and succeed.
GKS 프로그램은 시간이 지나며 더욱 체계적이고 글로벌한 장학 프로그램으로 발전했습니다. 동문 참여, 멘토링, 정보 공유가 더욱 확대된다면 미래 장학생들의 적응과 성장에 큰 도움이 될 것입니다.

7. What would you say to someone considering applying for GKS?

I would say to take that leap of faith. South Korea has so much to offer, not just for academic development, but for personal and professional development. With hard work, openness, and courage, GKS can become a life-changing opportunity.
GKS 지원을 고민하는 학생들에게 용기를 내어 도전하라고 말하고 싶습니다. 한국은 학업뿐만 아니라 개인적, 전문적 성장을 위한 많은 기회를 제공하는 곳입니다.

8. How did you prepare for life in Korea?

As a student in the International Youth Fellowship program, I was able to meet South Korean volunteers, hear about Korean culture, and prepare for life in Korea. The experience helped me adapt more easily after arriving and understand cultural differences with a more open mind.
한국에 오기 전에는 한국인 봉사자들과 교류하며 한국 문화와 생활을 미리 접했습니다. 이러한 준비는 한국 생활 적응과 문화적 차이를 이해하는 데 큰 도움이 되었습니다.

9. What advice would you give to future GKS applicants?

Think deeply about your career goals and ambitions, and how being a GKS scholar will assist you in achieving those goals. Keep an open mind, seek support from professors and peers, and use the GKS experience to grow as a global professional.
