Dongseo University’s Im Kwon Taek College of Film and Performing Arts has been included by the highly prestigious magazine Variety on its April 2017 list of 19 “Competitive Film Schools.” Also included on the list are such notable institutions Yale University, Columbia University, Northwestern University,Poland’s National Film School and the India Film and Television Institute.DSU’sIm Kwon Taek College of Film and Media Artsis the only film school in all of East Asia to appear on the list.

Variety has been in publication since December 1905, when it was launched in New York City as a weekly periodical covering vaudeville. In 1907, Variety published what is considered the first film review in history. In 1933, Daily Variety was launched in Hollywood to cover the increasingly influential film industry. The magazine is well-known for its extensive coverage of film, television, music, technology and culture in general. Its writers have coined many show business expressions in its 111-year history, such as ‘show biz’, ‘sitcom’, ‘legit’, ‘boffo’ and ‘payola’. The last paper edition of the magazine appeared in 2013. Since then, the publication has appeared in electronic format only. Every month, Variety.com has 17 million visitors.

On April 30, the Ministry of Education and the Korean Council for University Education announced that they selectedeleven universitiesfor the new ACE+ student development program.Dongseo University, which wasaloneselected among the southeastern universitiesand has a competition ratio of8.9-to-1, will be able to strengthen its “The Only One” self-development project. This project aims to help students identify and develop their own individual talents and to brand themselves accordingly. Through close consultation with academic advisors, students will complete the curriculum through selection, combination, and personalization so that they can develop their own individual brands. 

Dongseo University plans on sourcing the best educational contents that are needed to meet the various educational needs ofitsstudents, both domestic and foreign. DSU will use a modular educational system for its “The Only One” human resources training.

"With this selection, our university has gained the necessary power to move forward into the future," said Dongseo University’s President Jekuk Chang.“We willprovideeducationthat uncoversthe individual talents each student has and help all students better develop and brand themselves.”

The ACE + project is an expansion and reorganization of the ACE project, which was launched in 2010, and new universities are selected every year for the purpose of fostering “well-taught” universities.

The 32 universities selected from 2014 to 2016 will continue in the program this year.

A total of 89 universities, including 26 in theSeoulmetropolitan area and 63 inotherprovinces, applied for the ACE+ program this year. The ACE + project management committee made the final decision to support new universities based on the results of their first and second stage evaluations.
