MY LIFE IN KOREA
I'm from latin america , Peru, a country that is located at the other side
of the world, while it's winter here in Korea, in my country people are
enjoying summer.
As a latin migrant I briefly detail my background and the reason I came
to Korea :
Sociology, my previous career deeply changed my life, I became an
active person, it changed the commitment to my country and my
perspective about my role in the society.
During my college years in Peru, I autonomously worked on projects as
social activists in various organizations.
Because my job on projects in various organizations and university
activities I made a network with my colleagues and famous politicians
from my country; nevertheless in the meddle from my career I started
to work in a non-profit organization where I conducted educational
projects for young people and women in rural areas that were with
economic difficulties. from education and also worked in environmental
projects to improve community awareness.
My work was very interesting and promising it helped me to know the
political and social reality of my country.
At the same time my interest about Asia got started when I met some
Korean volunteers dedicated to spreading Korean culture and after I
finished my work contract I decided to move here.
I became interested in Korea's because it's rapid economic development
and wanted to do comparative research.
The previous vacation from I moved definitely to Jeju I came on a trip
and visited many places on mainland but I felt more attracted to this
beautiful island.
I arrived to Jeju some years ago, local people always have treated me
very kindly, they taught me the local culture and the things to take into
consideration for a good coexistence with the local people and they have
always been curious about my country and my language.
After I settled on Jeju Island I decided to study Korean language very
hard for being integrate to the korean society.
The desire to get new experiences and the challenge of learning a
completely new language and culture attracted me a lot and motivated
me to never give up despite the difficulties of living far from my
country.
From the beginning I sought to make Korean friendships with which I
could constantly practice Korean and I have always sought to participate
in the most popular Jeju events such as marathons, integration programs
for foreigners and festivals.
Also on my own initiative I have participated in activities to promote
my country in Korea with the Peruvian Embassy to conduct a cultural
program introducing Peru's food, music and tourist destinations.
Now I'm preparing with an international association a promotion of
some famous peruvian films.
As well as a foreign student I have been invited many times to teach in
an elementary, middle and high schools as part of programs conducted
by Korean organizations such as the International cooperation office,
JNU and other various organizations and NGOs, etc. In addition to
participating on my own initiative in big festivals exposing Peruvian
articles, music, food to promote my country because I think that living
abroad makes you for sure an ambassador of your country and
encourage you to be better every day.
I also participated in some independent programs in which I could share
with others, for example in a leadership programs volunteering and help
to practice English for children with domestic difficulties.
I also help connect a lot of people from outside with local institutions
and organizations during education, sporting and artistic events in Jeju
through the Spanish language.
I studied politics and diplomacy and trade studies in dual majors and
apart from learning a lot about international politics, I also collaborated
with my faculty teaching about my country and language to my
classmates interested in South America.
From 2015 I did a variety of official activities at Global Inner Peace
NGO cooperating in different projects, I did internship and taught
Spanish, through these activities I could put into practice my major .
I'm part of Jeju International Student Organization JISO, as a liaisson
officer of the Organization I am working hard to help other students to
being integrated as a international community and helping to JNU to
highlight our university as a preference educational destination in South
Korea.
As a graduate student I am deeply interested in the international
trends related to global trade and commerce. I want to be an expert and
apply the theory of international trade in my professional future.
Finally, my experience in Korea will resume in connecting all my
background that is my knowledge about sociology, politics, diplomacy
and business studies and building networks with local and foreign people
whose careers or organizations are related to my major.
I want to make my experience in Korea to be the best stage of my life
so far and in the future keep in touch with the wonderful people with
whom I have made friendship. -

JISO Annual Report 2019 (Muhammad Sajjad)
- Treasurer -
First of all, I want to introduce myself, my name is Muhammad Sajjad. I joined Jeju National University
(JNU) as a Master's degree student in march 2018. Currently, I completed my degree in Mechanical
engineering from Computational Mechanics Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Dung Jung Won.
Once I finished my Bachelor's degree from Pakistan, I was planning to apply for university which are not
only good in research studies but also has the best weather and beautiful locations to visits. That time one
ofmyfriendstoldmeaboutJejuNationalUniversityandsuggestedmetoapplyhereformymaster'sdegree.
Within few days I submit my application and luckily I got my admission here in JNU. Once I reach to Jeju
the university is better than I expected and the beauty of this place is far from my imagination. Professors
and everyone treated me very well and I feel myself lucky to study here in this beautiful environment with
all these beautiful peoples.
In the first year of my study, I only came to know about the Jeju International Student Organization (JISO)
and how they are helping international students in every aspect of life during there stay at university. By
joining few events which are held by the university with the support of JISO I was interested to work in
this organization in my future. Here I am attaching few glimpses of previous events which were held in
2018.
By joining all these events I become inspired by JISO and what they are doing for international communities. This year 2019 I applied and selected as treasurer of JISO team. I had the best experience of my life by working together with such a good team. By working together, we solved
many problems related to the dormitory and kitchen, which they renovate recently to add new
facilities for the students.
Same like the previous year we successfully organize many events such as Food festival, Flea
market, international Students day, Running Marathon and many more.
In the end, I would like to give my gratitude to the Jeju National University for supporting such kinds of events and helping international students for their better experience of their life.
Also, special thanks go to Taeyoung for their help and support in every aspect of the
organization.
During my stay at JNU and JISO I had a great experience of my life with amazing peoples from all around the world which I am attaching in form of photos here.

especially for JISO, Miss.Taeyoung and all other members. As students we always busy

Here I attached photos that we were visited among this year and some events that we

Vietnam
Jeju National University – My Colorful Youth
Hello everyone, My name is Huong and I’m from Vietnam - the S-shaped country , far from Korea for 4
hours flight. Now I’m living in the beautiful Jeju Island. I came to Korea since September 2016, after one
year of learning Korean language, now I’m a last year master’s student at tourism development major.
During the learning process, luck came to me a lot but there were many difficulties that I experienced
myself. I am an international student but I have not started as well as many of my friends. I have to learn
a new language from scratch before majoring. I will share with you the things that motivated me and
how I experienced those difficulties on this dreamy but distant, quite inconvenient in this Island , so
from the beginning I always set goals to be better.
"Class president" is the first title I got when I arrived in Korea. Surely you think that I am excellent at
school? No, I'm self-elected, the memory I still remember so far because I am the only Vietnamese one
and 80% Chinese students. I put pressure on myself because when I was a class rep, it was often
'insecure' when someone surpassed my score.
Having experienced a "crisis" of language and culture, not having friends and acquaintances... But
fortunately the teachers in the Korean language course are really friendly and kindful.
After 1 year living in a new country, my thinking has changed a lot. By participating in many programs
not only of the school but also the national organizations in Jeju, I was able to expand my relationship. I
participated in some community projects, cultural exchange programs, I have contact with international
you peoples ... My department also has a lot of programs to facilitate student development and one
thing I'm extremely lucky with is ..the Office Assistant and the professors are really nice.
So now I am a Master's final year student, currently focusing on writing my thesis, I chose the topic
about my own Vietnam, so I was excited and don't have much pressure. I was preparing to graduate, so I
am completing my CV by trying to work harder to gain experience and improve my ability.
Three years is not too long but here are the stories that I myself have experienced. There are many
interesting stories, if you intend to study in Jeju, there is always a "volunteer" team that always takes
time to "take care" and become familiar with the culture here! You are always welcome ^^!. -
Azerbaijan
A story of one Azerbaijani student at Jeju National University
“I really want to go back to South Korea, I want to learn Korean language, I want to experience Korean
culture one more time”, I thought to myself after my first short trip to South Korea back in 2011. Here I
am, ready to start my fourth semester in 2020 as a master’s degree student at Jeju National University.
As a KGSP student I didn’t think too long where I want to do my Master Degree in Tourism
Management. Beautiful Island, UNESCO global geopark, the most popular tourist destination
within South Korea, famous for its beautiful pristine beaches, lush vegetation, black volcanic stones
and chilling wind all year round- Jeju Island undoubtedly was a priority for a person who
praises nature. Moreover, as a student I was extremely happy and lucky to know that
Department of Tourism Management is one of the oldest and strongest departments
at Jeju National University. I started my Master degree at JNU in September 2018. After a year of Korean Language school at
Chosun University in Gwangju, I moved to Jeju to start my degree program.
I knew about my courses being
taught fully in Korean, and it was what I actually wanted, because I believe that language is a key to
better and deeper understanding of local values and cultural specifics, but still it was challenging
for me. I was trying to grasp every word professor would say during lectures, keeping my
dictionary and notepad nearby at all the times and making endless notes.
And after couple of months I got accustomed to everything. Mainly because of my Korean
classmates who were always there to help and assist and explain, whatever I couldn’t understand.
I am extremely grateful to them for this. Professors at my department were also very supportive
and what’s important – patient, because it took me time to express myself properly in Korean.
Words are important at my department, where you study all about the world, people, culture and
languages. Beside learning about International Tourism Management my professors and
classmates provided plenty of information about Jeju Island and its indeed unique culture.
As an international student I have been introduced to a Korean mentor who was helping me a lot with
necessary information, translation and moreover recreation. Since my mentor was native Jeju person,
she showed me around the Island and taught me about distinctive attributes of Jeju culture.
More and more I was falling in love with my new destination. I felt welcomed.
For more serious assistance I always referred to Office of International Affairs, where all the queries
have been answered. International Office is a great support to International students who study
a lot and have little time to rest. We were always involved in different activities, festivals and
concerts and it was a great opportunity to refresh our mind and take a break from routine of
university life.
As for me the best part of being a student in Jeju National University is about meeting people who had
impact on my life. I met professors who enriched my knowledge in my field of study and friends who
became an important part of my life in Jeju Island and who made a place away from home a second
home.
